Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 12 Let Sparks Fly

Let Sparks Fly is worth forgiving for her Pinjarra failure on August 28 after appearing to travel comfortably before stopping quickly, with respiratory noise reported and the mare scoped after the race.

Her two runs prior were much more encouraging, finishing off late over 1400m first-up before making ground when rising to a mile at Northam on August 6.

The step to 2100m is a positive given her best form last campaign came over similar trips, highlighted by consecutive 2000m wins at Pinjarra.

Tash Faithfull returns to the saddle after riding a Thursday double at Northam and, in an open staying race, Let Sparks Fly is worth specking at a huge each-way price.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 10 No. 14 Chamierro

There are obvious first-up queries with Chamierro, who has generally produced his best racing deeper into a campaign and over longer distances.

The positives are the soft map, just 52kg and a solid platform from three quiet winter trials ahead of this return.

Both of his metropolitan wins have come at Eagle Farm, while his latest appearance here resulted in a narrow March 21 defeat after working early and only being denied on the line.

Still lightly raced and possessing some raw ability, Chamierro looks capable of outperforming his price in an open finale.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 6 Big Sue

Big Sue has been racing consistently this preparation and produced another sound performance over 1400m on August 15 despite the race shape working firmly against him.

The nine-year-old settled too far back in a slowly run contest but still reeled off the fastest final 200m, having already won second-up over 1250m at Morphettville Parks earlier in the campaign.

A wide draw contributed to a colder ride last time, whereas a much better gate gives connections the chance to settle him closer while carrying 1kg less.

This is no harder than his recent assignments and, with a double-figure quote available, Big Sue can give another strong account.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 10 No. 10 Starphistocated

A strong closing effort first-up over 1300m showed Starphistocated had returned in good order, recording the third-fastest final 400m and 200m despite doing her best work over further.

She was still five weeks between runs heading into the Goulburn Cup on August 23 and never looked comfortable when caught wide and chasing throughout a fast-run race.

That outing should bring her fitness forward sharply, while she was a third-up Midway winner last campaign before later finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Aspiration Quality over this track-and-trip.

With a kinder draw allowing her to settle closer, Starphistocated appeals as an each-way play at a big price in the last.

Sandown Roughie Tip

Sandown Roughie - Race 5 No. 9 Almost An Angel

The Atlantic Jewel Stakes looks an open fillies’ feature and Almost An Angel brings enough upside to warrant consideration at a huge quote.

She was never a winning chance in the Quezette Stakes after being shuffled back and held up, yet still produced the fastest final 200m behind Natural Fling.

Her juvenile campaign also showed promise, culminating in a Listed placing during the Adelaide carnival before she was spelled.

The rise in trip and softer draw both look suitable, and with Luke Nolen taking over, a more positive early ride could bring her right into the race.
