Champions Day at Flemington on Saturday, November 7, features Zuleika as a notable each-way outsider in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes, returning to her preferred 2000m distance after a strong finish in her latest run. Other roughie tips include Rocking Society at Ascot, Swift Dragon at Eagle Farm, Dobbinair at Morphettville, and My Phar Lady at Rosehill. Each selection is supported by recent form, tactical versatility, or positive changes in conditions, but all face competitive fields and are not guaranteed outcomes.

Champions Day brings the Melbourne Cup Carnival to a close at Flemington on Saturday, November 7, while the Five Diamonds at Rosehill and feature racing at Ascot headline another big afternoon across Australia.

We've identified five roughies across Ascot, Eagle Farm, Flemington, Morphettville Parks and Rosehill with form to outrun their odds, while our Saturday Best Bets cover the leading selections from all five meetings.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 8 No. 11 Rocking Society

The Listed Luckygray Stakes looks more open than early markets suggest, with short-priced favourite Aberdeen Flyer bringing strong form but still having managed only one victory from 11 career starts.

Rocking Society appeals as an outsider capable of testing the market elect after an encouraging third on October 17, particularly given the Jason Miller-trained gelding has placed in three of four previous second-up attempts.

His record over the Ascot 1800m is particularly encouraging, with a victory and a second from two appearances, while last season's extended campaign included a Stakes placing over this track and distance and competitive performances in several staying features.

The six-year-old remains a genuine, tactically versatile galloper who regularly performs well at Ascot, and with the 54kg minimum weight and a return to a preferred journey, he looks capable of giving backers a sight at generous odds.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 10 No. 4 Swift Dragon

A freshen-up and the addition of blinkers could spark a sharp improvement from Swift Dragon, who requires a leap of faith after two disappointing three-year-old appearances.

The Liam Birchley-trained gelding has not raced since failing in the Toowoomba Guineas on September 26, although there was encouragement in his October 13 Sunshine Coast trial, where he won comfortably with blinkers applied.

He demonstrated considerable ability as a two-year-old, including an impressive performance over this distance in March when comfortably defeating Esperanza, who subsequently won consecutive races at Eagle Farm during October.

The son of Dracarys always appeared likely to benefit from further maturity and headgear, and while this is a deep race with several chances, his earlier form suggests he is capable of considerably better than his recent results indicate.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 5 No. 7 Zuleika

Queensland trainer Todd Pollard has found an interesting assignment for Zuleika in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes, with the progressive four-year-old appearing to have been targeted specifically at this 2000m contest.

The mare finished her winter campaign with a Stakes victory over 2100m at Eagle Farm before resuming in Listed company on October 10, producing an encouraging effort when doing her best work late and continuing strongly through the line.

Her latest appearance at Randwick was even better, with Zuleika appearing one run short against fitter opposition but continuing to find the line strongly, suggesting she should now be approaching peak fitness.

The return to 2000m looks ideal, while she is back against her own sex and has sufficient tactical versatility to take advantage of barrier five, making her one of the more appealing outsiders on Champions Day.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 11 Dobbinair

An unusual preparation has left Dobbinair with something to prove, although Saturday's return to 1250m appears much more suitable after an unsuccessful attempt at the Balaklava Cup over 1600m and a subsequent drop to 1050m.

The son of Grunt briefly threatened in the Balaklava feature before weakening late, while the return to a short sprint at Morphettville on October 17 left him struggling to find his rhythm after settling near the rear.

Despite that, the Shayne and Chelsea Cahill-trained gelding produced the fastest final 400m and 200m of the contest, suggesting there is still plenty to work with as he returns to a distance that better suits his racing style.

He has previously been competitive over these sprint journeys, while the return to firmer ground and a drop to the 54kg minimum are further positives for a runner who looks capable of producing a strong finish at a substantial price.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 2 No. 10 My Phar Lady

A more positive ride could bring My Phar Lady right into contention third-up in Saturday's Midway Handicap, particularly with a favourable inside draw giving Ashley Morgan the opportunity to settle the mare closer to the speed.

She has already demonstrated her ability at this level, winning a Rosehill Midway in February before finishing third over 1500m the following month, while her two performances this preparation have been better than the results suggest.

The mare settled well back under a substantial weight first-up before encountering traffic at crucial stages on October 24, yet still recorded the second-fastest closing sectionals of that contest.

With another run behind her, an extra 100m to suit and a return to Rosehill, My Phar Lady looks capable of improving sharply and featuring at an attractive each-way price.
