Ararat Tips November 8

Ararat RSL Sir Brudenell White BM70 Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Ararat Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Legend Beast

Legend Beast looks capable of registering consecutive victories after an encouraging introduction to marathon racing two starts ago, with the Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained gelding appearing well suited to Sunday's staying assignment.

The seven-year-old stepped up to 3100m at Warrnambool on his penultimate appearance, finishing second after settling back in the field and working home strongly, beaten 2.5 lengths but finishing more than five lengths clear of the third.

That performance suggested there was more to come over extended distances, while the form has subsequently received several boosts, with both the winner and third-place finisher recording victories since.

Dropping back to 2400m at Swan Hill last start, the son of Complacent justified his strong recent form with a half-length victory in Benchmark 62 company on a Good 4 surface, confirming his effectiveness over a range of staying distances.

Although Sunday's Soft 6 presents different conditions, Legend Beast has previously won on both Soft and Heavy ground, while the wide barrier should be manageable over this distance and Tom Ryan takes the ride for a galloper capable of continuing his winning form.

Midland Irrigation BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Ararat Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Southern Crescent

A return to Benchmark 66 company gives Southern Crescent an excellent opportunity to resume winning ways, with the Aaron Purcell-trained mare expected to improve second-up after an encouraging return last month.

The five-year-old recorded four victories during her previous preparation before being spelled following a disappointing metropolitan performance, while a win in the second of two lead-up trials suggested she had returned in good order.

Her first-up effort was full of merit, finishing third over 1100m after being held up behind runners in the straight before closing strongly to finish within 1.5 lengths of the winner.

Southern Crescent has demonstrated her versatility with victories on Good, Soft and Heavy tracks, while barrier three provides an opportunity to secure a favourable run and she returns to the same grade in which she won at Pakenham in February.

Jack Hill has developed an excellent association with the mare, recording a victory and three third-place finishes from four rides, and with previous winning second-up form to her name, Southern Crescent looks well placed to add another success.

Ararat Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Aftermath

Aftermath arrives at Sunday's Ararat Gold Cup in excellent form, having claimed consecutive country Cup victories following several encouraging performances in defeat earlier this preparation.

The Paul Preusker-trained gelding recorded the first of those victories over 2000m at St Arnaud before backing up seven days later with another impressive success at Mortlake, where he controlled the race from the front.

His latest victory came on Soft ground after winning on a Good surface at St Arnaud, confirming that the seven-year-old can perform strongly under varying conditions, while both wins have come over Sunday's 2000m distance.

The son of Rock 'N' Pop has developed a productive association with Linda Meech, who has partnered him at his past three appearances and retains the ride, with similar positive tactics expected again.

Barrier nine is not ideal for a natural front-runner, but Aftermath has demonstrated the early speed and determination to overcome awkward draws, and another strong performance could deliver the Preusker stable a third successive country Cup victory.

Programmed Ararat Bowl Tips (Race 7)

Ararat Value Bet - Race 7 No. 8 Princess Que

A return to country racing brought about an encouraging improvement from Princess Que last start, with the Simon Zahra-trained mare appearing to be building towards her fourth career victory.

The five-year-old finished eighth in metropolitan company at her first two appearances this preparation before stepping back in grade at Seymour, where she produced a much stronger performance to finish within a length of the winner over 1200m.

That Benchmark 70 contest has subsequently produced two winners, with the third and seventh-place finishers both successful at their next appearances, while Princess Que has since maintained her fitness with a third in a Flemington barrier trial.

Although all three runs this preparation have come on rain-affected surfaces, the mare has previously won twice on Good ground, including a metropolitan success at Sandown early last season, leaving her well equipped to handle any improvement in track conditions.

Barrier two should allow Princess Que to secure an economical passage, while Teo Nugent takes the ride for the first time, and with her latest performance suggesting she is approaching peak fitness, the mare looks capable of returning to winning form.
