Flemington Tips November 7
Race 1 - 12:40PM Inglis Banner Tips (1000m)
The late market could tell the story in the Inglis Banner, a typically open early-season two-year-old event to begin Champions Day.
7. Goddess Kay has looked the quickest of the first-starters at the jump-outs. She won the fastest 800m heat of the September 24 set at Flemington before again impressing when winning here on October 30.
The filly looks very forward despite being bred to get over further, while Craig Williams remains aboard from that latest workout. She is trained on course by the Corstens and Larkin stable and has remained steady on the second line of betting.
12. Palmilla could attract support at a bigger price. The daughter of Hanseatic was given a very quiet time in her first public appearance on October 13 before showing much more when leading throughout to win a 750m Pakenham jump-out on October 27.
13. Rusty Pearl was plain in her first jump-out on October 12 but improved significantly when taken back to Cranbourne a fortnight later. Ciaron Maher won this race last year with Calamari Ring.
4. Soldi is one of only two runners with race experience and was brave when leading throughout to win the Listed Debutant Stakes. The Hayes stable has trained two of the past four winners of this race.
Selections: 7-12-13-4
Race 2 - 1:15PM Ronald McDonald House VIC/TAS Mile Tips (1600m)
Any of the first three selections can be given strong chances, but 2. Fiorenot is perhaps the safest.
The Tom Dabernig-trained gelding is extremely consistent and already a dual Flemington winner. He returned with a strong Caulfield victory before staying at 1400m second-up, which worked against him, yet he still finished well when runner-up.
The rise to the mile third-up looks ideal and he has carried more weight to victory over longer trips at Flemington, so the 60kg is not a major concern. Jordan Childs also has plenty of options from barrier four, while the stable has been in excellent form. The unknown is how he handles any significant rain.
1. Roulette King could have plenty on these ability-wise. Connections had a shot at the Silver Eagle first-up in an attempt to qualify for the Golden Eagle, but 1300m proved too sharp. This is a massive drop in grade and he oozed class when reeling off four consecutive victories last campaign. He may still be a run short of his peak, but there is too much ability there to leave him out.
13. Superfabulistic hit a flat spot first-up before coming again and was suited rising to the mile second-up, only to have little luck at Warwick Farm. This is much harder, but she still has scope to improve and drops 6.5kg from that latest appearance.
10. Hiyaam Proud covered ground in a forgivable effort at Bendigo after returning well at Seymour. He draws much kinder here and drops in weight.
Selections: 2-1-13-10
Race 3 - 1:50PM Queen Elizabeth Stakes Tips (2600m)
There is not much between the leading three chances, but the upside may lie with 5. King Pedro.
He progressed strongly through the winter, including a big win over Pinhole before taking out the Grafton Cup in a performance that was better than the margin suggested after overcoming plenty of trouble.
A virus then ruled him out of The Metropolitan and put his spring campaign on the back foot, but his Hill Stakes return was sound before another good effort in the Moonee Valley Cup. The jump from 1900m to 2500m second-up was a difficult progression and he was unable to build momentum when required. Drawing wider here could actually help.
4. Pinhole looked somewhat limited during his first Australian campaign but has come on considerably this time in, winning twice through the spring including the Group 2 Herbert Power. He was absolutely luckless in the Moonee Valley Cup, held up at crucial stages before launching late and continuing strongly past the line. He was always going to be popular for a race like this off that effort.
1. Defiantly was ruled out of Tuesday's Melbourne Cup last Saturday after failing a veterinary re-examination, having initially presented with a change in gait. That interruption is an obvious query, but he is a strong, one-paced European stayer and could simply prove too good for this field if right.
9. Manzor Blue is the bolter for exotics. She lacks tactical speed, but her Moonee Valley Cup run was better than it reads and she is a proven stayer capable of producing a big finish.
Selections: 5-4-1-9
Race 4 - 2:30PM FISHER Stakes Tips (1200m)
You would be brave to trust many in this race, but 12. Cripps has put together a tidy record with five wins and three placings from 10 starts.
The son of Magnus really started to put things together last campaign, winning four of six appearances including the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill before a break.
There was not much to take from his October 13 jump-out after being restrained from a wide gate and going around under a hold. He has not raced down the straight but did place over 1400m in his only previous Flemington appearance, and the wide draw with his early speed should allow Billy Egan to work towards the outside lanes early.
17. Hankee Alpha looked a suspect favourite in last Saturday's Rising Fast Stakes but should not be sacked off that run. She was badly held up and continually shuffled back before getting clear far too late, then still finished off reasonably. She is much better placed drawn wider here, any rain helps and she bolted in at her only previous straight-track attempt.
11. Photograph is another who will not mind some give in the ground. She has been competitive throughout the spring and had little luck behind Flying For Fun on Derby Day. This looks no harder and she carries 1kg less.
2. Grand Larceny was a touch plain first-up, although the form from that race has worked out well, and he was another runner without much luck in the Rising Fast Stakes. He won on this meeting last year.
Selections: 12-17-11-2
Race 5 - 3:10PM TAB One Pool Matriarch Stakes Tips (2000m)
Do not underestimate up-and-coming Queensland trainer Todd Pollard with 7. Zuleika, who appeals as one of the better roughies of the carnival and looks targeted at this race.
The mare rounded out her winter with a Stakes victory at Eagle Farm over 2100m before a Listed return on October 10 that was better than it reads, doing her best work late and through the line.
Her Randwick performance last start was terrific. She looked one run short against fitter opposition but kept finding late, and that should top her off perfectly for 2000m. The four-year-old now returns against her own sex and has enough tactical versatility to make use of barrier five.
5. Too Darn Discreet can be forgiven for her Tesio Stakes failure after a throat issue was reported post-race, with a tongue tie now going on. She is already a three-time Flemington winner and her earlier spring runs suggested she was knocking on the door for a race like this. She also carries 4kg less from her latest run.
8. Vivy Air is interestingly placed at 2000m for the first time. She does not win out of turn but has produced a string of good ratings in decent company, while her recent Sydney form reads well, particularly the Craven Plate effort when getting home strongly late.
9. You Wahng is not hopeless. Her return was effectively a trial before just peaking on her effort second-up, and she can improve again getting to 2000m.
Selections: 7-5-8-9
Race 6 - 3:50PM VRC Champions Sprint Tips (1200m)
The $1.50-$1.60 quotes earlier in the week looked particularly short for 6. Tempted, but with the mare easing closer to $1.90 she is approaching a more reasonable price.
She clearly brings the strongest recent form after defeating Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising in The Everest on October 17, settling off the speed before producing a powerful finish. That extended her winning streak to six after she had already dominated the Group 2 Premiere Stakes earlier in the month, and 1200m is firmly established as her preferred trip.
The Flemington straight is the obvious unknown, particularly against several proven straight-track performers, while this comes three weeks after her major spring target. Barrier nine looks suitable for her first attempt here and her tactical versatility gives Chad Schofield options. She is not unbeatable, but remains clearly the one to beat.
11. Point Barrow is the knockout chance despite barrier two not being ideal. She has put everything together this spring, rebounding from a disappointing Moir Stakes return to win consecutive Group 3 races at Caulfield over 1200m.
She is now a seven-time winner from 12 starts and is already proven down the Flemington straight after winning last year's Red Roses Stakes. This is easily her toughest test, but she arrives in career-best form and Mark Zahra stays aboard.
7. Joliestar does not want it heavy, although soft ground is fine and firmer would suit even better. She did not relish a Heavy 9 when third as favourite in this race last year after previously bolting in down the straight in the 2025 Newmarket Handicap.
The five-time Group 1 winner has been one of Australia's most consistent sprinters and may still have something in reserve third-up after another honest Everest performance. James McDonald stays aboard and the wider draw is another positive.
3. Headwall has form around Tempted suggesting there is not a great deal between them at their best. The challenge is backing up seven days after travelling and contesting the Russell Balding, although he has placed in both previous attempts down the Flemington straight.
Selections: 6-11-7-3
Race 7 - 4:30PM VRC Champions Mile Tips (1600m)
It is difficult to make a serious case against 8. Autumn Glow in the Champions Mile.
The outstanding mare arrives third-up at her preferred 1600m after another perfectly managed campaign and has again been given plenty of time between runs. Her first Melbourne appearance is the only genuine unknown, but she is professional, tactically versatile and proven across varying conditions.
Barrier two should allow James McDonald to stalk likely leader and stablemate Lindermann before producing her turn of foot. She is prohibitively short to back outright, but equally difficult to oppose, with the better opportunities likely to come through the exotic markets.
9. Within The Law remains frustrating but her two runs this preparation are better than they read. She raced on inferior ground in the Silver Eagle yet still produced strong late sectionals before having virtually no chance when badly held up throughout last Saturday's Golden Eagle.
The seven-day turnaround should be less of an issue given she had such a soft run in transit, while she has previously won at Flemington. Beating Autumn Glow looks difficult, but she is interesting for the minor placings.
4. Sepals can be difficult to catch, although there is a growing suspicion Rosehill simply does not bring out his best. He went close behind Angel Capital first-up in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes before failing in the Alan Brown, similar to last winter when he bounced out of a Kingsford Smith failure to run second in the Stradbroke.
1. Tom Kitten has enough class to be in the money and arrives hard fit with blinkers going back on. His past two Group 1 victories have both come over the Flemington mile, while he was third in the Champions Stakes over 2000m on this program last year.
Selections: 8-9-4-1
Race 8 - 5:10PM TAB Champions Stakes Tips (2000m)
It will take another big effort from 1. Cosmic Crusader, but the Andrea Leek-trained galloper has continued to answer every challenge this preparation.
His Cox Plate victory came only seven days after the Caulfield Cup, yet he still produced a sustained finish to defeat several rivals he meets again here. He had already beaten Aeliana in the Turnbull Stakes over this course and distance, giving him two strong references at Flemington.
The colder Cox Plate ride allowed him to build momentum and that style should again suit on the spacious circuit. The obvious query is how much remains after a preparation stretching back through winter, but he continues to hold his form and remains the starting point.
9. Omni Man is the speculative value runner after an encouraging Australian debut in the Geelong Cup.
The Joseph O'Brien import settled back from a wide draw and built strongly into third, with that form subsequently franked when Point Of Law won the Melbourne Cup. He also arrives here with much fresher legs than most of his rivals.
Dropping from 2400m to 2000m is the query, but barrier six gives Dylan Browne McMonagle more options and his European form suggests enough change of speed to be competitive at the trip. It is an interesting placement and he appeals at a price.
10. Aeliana has strangely not gone beyond 2000m this spring despite looking as though she is crying out for further. She improved sharply from an average return to finish second behind Autumn Glow before placing in both the Turnbull and Cox Plate A win would not shock, but she looks short enough at the top of the market.
3. Sir Delius is difficult to assess, with blinkers going on for the first time. His first two spring runs were pass marks with the Cox Plate as the target, but he failed there despite reportedly still being underdone third-up. He remains the only horse to have defeated Autumn Glow, doing so over 2000m in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes during the autumn.
Selections: 1-9-10-3
Race 9 - 5:50PM HKJC World Pool Grand Handicap Tips (1100m)
You can make a case for most of these, including 1. Verdoux, who looks a fair enough price following a major drop in grade from the Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes last Saturday.
He outperformed a big starting price there and may have finished closer than fifth had he switched off heels at a key stage and followed Sweynesday, who was narrowly beaten. There were also excuses second-up at Caulfield when he attempted to angle into the better going but was kept in a pocket.
Verdoux arrived at Caulfield off a fair Mornington return and has generally been a genuine horse. The seven-day turnaround is the query, but he is capable of winning at this level and his first attempt down the Flemington straight resulted in victory.
7. Rohesia faces a less-than-ideal 1100m first-up assignment but has too much class to dismiss at a big price in BM80 company. She is a Stakes winner from the Adelaide Carnival and has been competitive in both previous straight-track attempts.
She has a solid grounding for the return after completing three October jump-outs, winning the latest at Flemington, and looks forward enough to run well.
6. Educated improved off two runner-up finishes to win at Seymour following a freshen-up and has missed the top two only once in seven starts. He has also already won over this track and distance.
18. Brave Design still needs a scratching to gain a start but has to be respected if he gets into the field. He returns as a gelding, showed plenty of ability early and won the latest of three October jump-outs.
