Etcheverry made an impressive start to the season, winning 11 of his opening 15 matches and capturing the ATP 500 Rio Open title.

However, the Argentine struggled to maintain that momentum, compiling a disappointing 6–15 record since Roland Garros. After reaching the fourth round of the US Open, Etcheverry suffered six consecutive defeats heading into Paris, with his inconsistent form leaving him hovering around the world's top 30.

The 27-year-old finally returned to winning ways in dramatic fashion in his Paris opener, overcoming the unpredictable Andrey Rublev 6–4, 6–7(4), 7–6(3) in a deciding-set tiebreak. Etcheverry's serve proved instrumental in the victory, with the Argentine firing 20 aces and landing 72% of his first serves.

Etcheverry again served brilliantly against Alex de Minaur in the second round, landing 76% of first serves and proving clutch on break points, saving 12/13 as he registered his first ever top 10 victory, 7-6(2) 6-3.

Hijikata has enjoyed a much-improved 2026 campaign, already doubling his tour-level win tally from last season after injuries contributed to his slide outside the world's top 100.

The Australian has largely remained injury-free this year, with his improved fitness translating into some encouraging results. Highlights include a fourth-round appearance at Indian Wells, where he defeated Alexander Bublik, and a quarter-final run at Queen's Club, highlighted by a victory over Jiri Lehecka.

However, Hijikata's form had dipped considerably heading into Paris, with the Australian losing six of his previous seven tour-level matches. The 25-year-old has responded emphatically, progressing through qualifying without dropping a set before dismantling Luciano Darderi 6–2, 6–2 in the opening round. It marked Hijikata's third Masters 1000 victory over the Italian this season.

Hijikata then produced the greatest performance of his career to date, recovering from a set down to defeat Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Aussie saved all three break points in the final set to register his fourth top 20 win of 2026.
