Gosford Tips November 5
The Grand Saddles Provincial Maiden Tips (Race 4)
Gosford Best Bet - Race 4 No. 2 Belle Chanteuse
Brad Widdup has enjoyed plenty of success at Gosford over the past 12 months, striking at almost 18%, and the trainer teams up with Chad Schofield aboard Belle Chanteuse, who looks well placed to break through at her third career start.
The filly had always shaped as though she would appreciate further ground during her lead-up trials, and that impression has been reinforced by her first two race appearances, with the daughter of Home Affairs doing her best work late rather than displaying an immediate turn of foot.
There was encouragement in her debut over 1200m, where she was only beginning to warm up approaching the finish, before attracting solid market support for a 1300m maiden at Warwick Farm on October 21 and again finding the line strongly over a distance short of her best.
The rise to 1600m looks ideal at this stage of her preparation, while a return to provincial company represents a drop in grade, and although she has drawn wide, there should be an opportunity for Schofield to press forward after the filly showed some early speed last start.
With two runs now behind her and further improvement expected over a more suitable distance, Belle Chanteuse looks capable of overcoming the outside draw and recording her maiden victory in a race that appears quite thin.
Central Coast NSW Legacy BM64 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Gosford Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Pentagon
There were encouraging signs from Pentagon early in his Australian career, including an impressive debut victory last November, and after struggling to build on that promise during a brief winter preparation, the gelding appears to be gradually rediscovering his best form for Marc and Mitchell Conners.
A dominant trial victory on September 28 suggested he had returned in good order, although his behaviour behind the barriers proved costly when resuming in a competitive Benchmark 64 over a distance short of his preferred trip.
That first-up performance was better than the bare result indicated, particularly given the strength of the opposition, with the winner subsequently stepping into Sydney metropolitan company and winning again at his next appearance.
There was further improvement when Pentagon finished a determined second at Hawkesbury on October 27, where the fitter winner secured a favourable inside run and established a decisive advantage, but the gelding continued to fight strongly through the line without ever looking likely to overhaul his rival.
Now third-up and stepping to 1600m, he should be approaching peak fitness, while Shannen Llewellyn has the option to push forward and potentially control the tempo, giving Pentagon an excellent opportunity to build on his latest performance and return to winning form.
The Ary, Toukley Class 1 & Maiden Plate Tips (Race 6)
Gosford Value Bet - Race 6 No. 11 Scoish Maloish
A four-week break between runs is unlikely to be a significant concern for Scoish Maloish, who was scheduled to race at Gosford on October 22 before the meeting was abandoned, with no reported setbacks during the interrupted preparation.
The lightly raced three-year-old looks well placed third-up for the Conners stable after showing some encouraging signs at Hawkesbury last start, where he briefly hit a flat spot before working through the line in a manner suggesting he would appreciate additional ground.
There is still considerable scope for improvement as the gelding continues to develop, and his previous preparation provides some useful encouragement, particularly his third-up appearance in a Gosford Super Maiden that had some depth.
That contest was won by stablemate Jonson, who subsequently franked the form with a Class 1 victory at his next appearance, suggesting Scoish Maloish was competing against capable opposition despite being unable to break through himself.
The rise in distance should play to his strengths, while there is an opportunity to settle closer to the speed alongside favourite Freddie Bassett, who has been disappointing in both spring appearances despite showing early promise, making Scoish Maloish an appealing alternative at each-way odds.
