It's just the 11th tournament of the year for Djokovic, but incredibly he still has a chance to qualify for the ATP Finals after making the final of the Australian Open, the semi-finals of Wimbledon and winning his 102nd tour-level title in Beijing.
Djokovic's bid to secure a ticket to Turin took a hit when he lost his opening match in Shanghai to Hubert Hurkacz and his second round in Basel last week, where he went down in a deciding set breaker to Jan-Lennard Struff - someone he had beaten in all eight previous meetings.
The 39-year-old was then dealt an extremely tough opening round draw in Paris against Basel champion Valentin Vacherot, but the Serbian managed to overcome more physical issues to gradually grind down his opponent, who was also fatigued from his title-winning week. Djokovic edged out the second set before completing a 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-1 victory.
