Champions Stakes 2026 Betting Tips - The Final Word on a Fierce Spring Rivalry
The 2026 Champions Stakes at Flemington features 11 runners contesting the Group 1 2000m event. Cosmic Crusader is the main tip to win, following a remarkable Cox Plate triumph and previous success over this course and distance. His resilience and tactical versatility are highlighted, though his lengthy campaign is a concern. Omni Man is recommended each-way, bringing fresh legs and a strong Geelong Cup performance, where he finished third behind Point Of Law, who later won the Melbourne Cup. Omni Man's drop in distance and favourable draw add to his appeal against more exposed rivals.

- Cosmic Crusader's lengthy preparation is a concern, but rivals also face demanding schedules
The Champions Stakes brings the Group 1 action to a close at Flemington on Saturday, November 7, with 11 runners set to contest the $3 million weight-for-age feature on the final day of the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The last of three Group 1 races on Champions Day, the 2000m contest brings together several familiar rivals from the Cox Plate and Turnbull Stakes, with the demanding spring campaigns of the leading contenders adding another layer of intrigue. Cosmic Crusader is chasing further success after his remarkable Cox Plate triumph, while Aeliana and Birdman are among those looking to turn the tables.
Aeliana heads the early Champions Stakes betting at $3 with Laserbet, narrowly ahead of Cosmic Crusader at $3.20, while Birdman is next in the market at $5.50.
2026 Champions Stakes Tips
2026 Champions Stakes Best Bet - Cosmic Crusader
It will take another remarkable effort for Cosmic Crusader to win Saturday's Champions Stakes, but the Andrea Leek-trained galloper has already demonstrated just how tough he is this preparation. His Cox Plate triumph came on a seven-day turnaround from the Caulfield Cup, having already been in work for several months, and the way he responded to that demanding schedule suggests there's still plenty of fight left in him.
I'm not in a hurry to back anything he defeated in the Cox Plate, although Aeliana, Birdman and Ceolwulf are all capable of turning the tables. Cosmic Crusader had their measure on the day, however, and there was plenty of merit in the victory, particularly given the pressure of backing up so quickly after a demanding 2400m assignment.
He also defeated Aeliana fair and square in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over this course and distance early last month, providing another strong reference for Saturday's contest. His subsequent Caulfield Cup performance was honest without threatening, while the way he handled that staying assignment demonstrated his resilience and tactical versatility against quality opposition.
He's shown he can race prominently when circumstances demand, but the colder ride in the Cox Plate allowed him to build momentum before producing a sustained finish. That approach looks particularly suitable for a big-striding galloper on the spacious Flemington circuit, and there's every reason to expect William Pike to consider similar tactics again, particularly with the return to 2000m.
The obvious concern is how much more Cosmic Crusader has left after a lengthy preparation that began during winter, although several of his main rivals are also deep into their campaigns and coming off major spring targets. Aeliana has now had four runs this preparation without stretching beyond 2000m, while others are also being asked to reproduce their best after demanding recent assignments. It's a tricky race with genuine dangers, but Cosmic Crusader has repeatedly answered the questions put to him and remains the starting point.
2026 Champions Stakes Value Bet - Omni Man
Whether Omni Man has the sharpness to handle the drop from 2400m to 2000m remains a legitimate query, but the Joseph O'Brien-trained import brings an intriguing fresh form reference into Saturday's Champions Stakes. Unlike several of his established Australian rivals, he's had just one local appearance, and there was plenty to like about his performance despite the distance and circumstances not entirely playing to his strengths.
He made his Australian debut in the Group 3 Geelong Cup on October 21, where he attracted market support before settling towards the rear from a wide barrier. Geelong isn't always an ideal circuit for horses attempting to make ground from that position, but Omni Man continued to build momentum through the final stages, finishing a strong third behind Point Of Law and Small Fry.
That form could hardly have been franked any better, with Point Of Law subsequently producing an extraordinary victory in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Omni Man was beaten only two lengths at Geelong, and while the winner has since enhanced his reputation considerably, the performance also reflected well on the Irish visitor, who was making his first appearance after arriving from Europe.
The draw is considerably more favourable this time, with barrier six giving Dylan Browne McMonagle more options to find cover and position Omni Man within striking distance of the leaders. His European performances have demonstrated an ability to produce a change of speed over staying distances, and that could prove valuable in a strongly contested 2000m race, particularly if he can settle into a rhythm before building through his gears.
It's an interesting placement from the O'Brien camp, with the gelding stepping back in distance rather than pursuing another staying assignment, but the decision deserves respect given his encouraging Australian debut. He also arrives with a relatively fresh set of legs compared with several rivals who have been through demanding spring campaigns, and there's enough in his profile to suggest he could appreciate a genuine 2000m contest at Flemington. He's a speculative selection against proven Group 1 performers, but at an attractive price, Omni Man is worth supporting on an each-way basis.
