Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 5 Triple The Chant

A half-sister to the talented but frustrating Listed winner Triple Missile, Triple The Chant was impossible to miss when resuming on June 17, launching late from the rear of the field.

She produced the race's fastest closing sectionals to just miss over 1200m, a trip well short of her best, and the rise to 1400m is a positive given her winning form has come over further.

Triple The Chant has shown she can sprint home off a slow tempo, so the wide draw isn't a major concern for a mare who settles back anyway.

This Belmont finale lacks depth, and while some rivals may be better suited by the conditions, she's an appealing each-way chance if the track pattern favours those running on.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 9 No. 11 Beach Pad

Connections elected not to back Beach Pad up at Caulfield on June 27 after he raced seven days earlier at Flemington in a stronger contest than the one he finds here.

There was merit to that latest performance after he was cramped at the start, settled well back and was completely unsuited by the race shape, yet still worked home soundly despite never threatening.

The campaign began with a strong Warrnambool effort carrying 62.5kg before he progressed to score during the Swan Hill Carnival.

Prepared by Shane Jackson, Beach Pad handles all conditions, the rise in trip is a positive, and he looks well placed with 55.5kg, 5kg less than he carried to victory second-up and only 2kg more than his tougher last-start assignment.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 4 No. 4 Mississippi Prince

It's a fairly thin race on paper, with Dagger likely to start favourite after a consistent preparation that includes a win in this grade and two subsequent placings in stronger company.

Mississippi Prince can roll forward with the market elect after two encouraging winter trials without blinkers, with the headgear reapplied on race day.

Although he doesn't win out of turn, he's been competitive in stronger company, and there was merit to both of his May runs despite finishing unplaced.

He was also consistent throughout last autumn and winter, highlighted by a BM85 victory at Eagle Farm, making him a worthwhile value play.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 5 No. 8 Take A Pick

Both the June 15 trial and his stable debut 12 days later suggested Take A Pick has settled in well since joining the Sarah Rutten stable.

First-up over 1400m he was taken back from a wide draw, never looked a winning chance and still worked home soundly from an impossible position to finish seventh-of-14.

The son of Lucas Cranach shapes as though he'll appreciate even further in time, but he's won fresh over seven furlongs previously and the extra 150m is another positive.

This assignment is slightly easier than the one he resumed in a fortnight ago, and with veteran Jason Holder retaining the ride, Take A Pick appeals as a genuine roughie.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 3 No. 11 So Rebellious

You can almost treat So Rebellious' June 27 return as another trial after he resumed at huge odds in a strong BM72 dominated by the progressive quinella of Tarzing and Big Papa.

That race had excellent depth, with Cherish Me, Konsa, Royal Flare and Damien all bringing strong form credentials into the contest.

Back to Midway grade second-up, the son of Rebel Dane draws to settle much closer, rises in distance and carries the same weight as he did first-up.

So Rebellious has contested handy races throughout his career, broke through deep into his summer preparation and impressed in the trials leading into this campaign, making him an attractive roughie.
