Saturday's racing action is headlined by Victoria Derby Day at Flemington and Golden Eagle Day at Randwick, but there are also opportunities to find runners at bigger odds across Doomben, Morphettville and Ascot.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 5 No. 6 Storm Away

A genuine tempo in Saturday's 1100m handicap could play into the hands of Storm Away, who has the finishing speed to make an impact from off the pace.

The Mitchell Pateman-trained gelding showed promise earlier in his career, winning consecutive races before placing twice upon returning from a spell, although his form subsequently tapered off.

Bar plates were fitted towards the end of his previous campaign, suggesting possible hoof concerns, but importantly they come off for this resumption, with a tongue tie added and blinkers replacing winkers.

Patrick Carbery will need to negotiate barrier 11, but with plenty of speed engaged, Storm Away could be well suited to settling back and charging home at attractive odds.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 8 No. 11 Entrusting

Entrusting is worth including at a price in Saturday's Class 6 contest, with the Billy Healey-trained galloper capable of producing a stronger performance than his recent form might indicate.

The gelding has shown enough ability to suggest he can be competitive at this level when circumstances work in his favour, although securing the right run will be important against established opposition.

Cejay Graham takes the ride, providing an opportunity to extract a more positive result if Entrusting can settle comfortably and conserve his effort for the closing stages.

There are risks attached, as expected with a roughie, but he offers a different betting angle in a competitive field and is worth considering at generous odds.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 4 No. 5 Sweynesday

Sweynesday produced an encouraging return to Australian racing in the Caulfield Sprint, doing his best work late from a difficult position.

He was the only runner to make significant ground from the rear, recording some of the fastest closing sectionals of the meeting in a performance better than the finishing position suggests.

His New Zealand form points to a capable sprinter who can be effective over further, making the rise to 1200m second-up a suitable progression.

The Flemington straight presents a fresh challenge, but his ability to sustain a strong finishing burst gives him genuine each-way appeal in the Rising Fast Stakes.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 8 No. 7 Rousing Refrain

A rise to 1511m third-up looks likely to suit Rousing Refrain, whose better performances have generally come over longer distances and against stronger opposition.

His 1100m resumption at Murray Bridge was an unsuitable assignment, while there was considerable encouragement in his October 17 effort behind Artistic Genius at Morphettville.

Although never threatening the winner, the John O'Connor-trained gelding recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the meeting, suggesting his fitness is building nicely.

Caitlin Tootell has recorded four winners from 16 rides for the stable this season, and while barrier 14 is a concern, Rousing Refrain often produces his best work when allowed to build momentum out wide.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 10 No. 12 Super Infinity

Super Infinity has shown enough this preparation to warrant consideration at bigger odds in the final race at Randwick, particularly if he can reproduce his stronger recent efforts.

The Tim Donnelly-trained gelding resumed with an impressive victory on a synthetic surface before transferring that form to turf with a runner-up finish at Dubbo.

A subsequent trial win on his home track has helped keep him up to the mark, and a strong tempo up front could bring him right into calculations late.

Ashley Morgan takes the ride at 55.5kg, and although barrier 13 leaves him with work to do, settling back and producing one sustained finish could make him dangerous late.
