Royal Randwick hosts one of the biggest meetings of the Sydney spring on Saturday, headlined by the $10 million Group 1 Golden Eagle over 1500m.
The 10-race card also features the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes and $750,000 Sydney Gold Cup. The track was rated a Good 4 on Friday, with the rail in the true position and overcast conditions forecast.

Randwick Tips October 31
Race 1 - Toyota Forklifts Handicap Tips (1500m)
It's a very open start to the Golden Eagle program, but 3. Azarax gets his best setup of the preparation third-up.
He lacked a turn-of-foot first-up and was again somewhat one-paced at Rosehill on October 14, although that latest fifth was better than it reads after he was among the better performers from the on-speed brigade. The extra 100m suits, he drops 3.5kg and Chad Schofield can use barrier one to hold a position without doing too much work early.
1. Agent Zero was fair when heavily backed first-up on the Kensington track and should improve, although he may still be looking for further. The key is blinkers going back on, as all three career wins have come with the shades on.
6. Force March faces his toughest test but remains lightly raced and progressive. He chased well when runner-up at Rosehill on October 10 and the bigger circuit plus another 100m should suit.
7. Donatello appeared to have his chance last start, but that was only second-up and he should continue improving as the distances increase.
Selections: 3-1-6-7
Race 2 - TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1400m)
2. Bluish Hue looks the obvious starting point in a Highway lacking the depth of some recent editions.
The Matthew Dunn-trained gelding has finished first or second in all five runs this preparation, including a Rosehill Highway victory on September 26. He then had almost a month between runs before narrowly going down at Randwick last Saturday, and the drop back to 1400m should pose no issue.
Blinkers go on and Nash Rawiller remains aboard, which gives him every chance to continue that consistent campaign.
5. Magic Merlin had little go right in his Highway attempt at Rosehill on October 10, spending much of the straight held up. He had won three of his previous four starts and that latest run is worth forgiving, although the drop from his more effective mile range is the query.
4. Zumbo is building towards a peak third-up after more than five weeks between his first two runs of the preparation. He is untried at 1400m but should be fitter now.
16. Street Force had a messy watch last start after stronger earlier form this campaign. The wide draw is the obvious knock.
Selections: 2-5-4-16
Race 3 - Mostyncopper Handicap Tips (1300m)
5. Damien resumes for a Kris Lees stable that can be difficult to assess fresh, with little often given away at the trials, but this looks a suitable return assignment.
There is plenty of early speed despite the small field, which should allow Tommy Berry to take a sit and blend into the race late. Damien did not progress quite as expected last preparation, but his earlier three-year-old form through horses such as Grafterburners and Ninja reads extremely well for this level.
He still needs to show he has returned in that sort of touch, but anything approaching his better form would make him very hard to beat.
1. Mawjood has strong fresh statistics and has trialled well ahead of his return with Nash Rawiller aboard. He carries 61kg but has already shown he can perform with weight.
4. Ruination has been a touch disappointing since winning first-up, although he now drops sharply in grade after contesting stronger races and has the benefit of race fitness.
8. Just Response has generally come to hand quickly, remains lightly raced and gets the benefit of barrier two.
Selections: 5-1-4-8
Race 4 - Four Pillars Midway Tips (1500m)
5. Cuban Cigar gets Nash Rawiller for the Four Pillars and that looks a significant positive for a galloper who is still learning his craft.
The four-year-old has built an excellent record of four wins and four placings from 12 starts and was unlucky when third as favourite in the Coonamble Cup last time. Barrier 16 may not be a negative either, with Cuban Cigar generally looking more comfortable when able to work to the outside of runners.
He has been in work since early in the season, but his previous campaign showed he can hold his form deep into a preparation.
17. Change My Address was good first-up at Rosehill on September 30 when a major market drifter, producing the fastest final 600m and 400m of the race despite being unsuited. She draws much better here second-up and has completed a trial between runs.
18. Nomadic could be the forgotten runner. He was well below his best last time in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes, but had broken through over a mile prior to that and was competitive at Group 1 level in the Champagne Stakes via his only previous Randwick try.
16. Stand My Ground is an interesting first-up placement and may have as much upside and talent as anything in the race. Her latest Hawkesbury trial was sharp and she is one to be wary of fresh.
Selections: 5-17-18-16
Race 5 - ALM On-Premise Handicap Tips (2000m)
It's difficult to look past 2. Perisher after an impressive Australian debut at Rosehill on October 14.
The Australian Bloodstock import was respected in the market and duly saluted over 1500m in a BM88, comfortably beating Nobler, who had rounded out his previous preparation with a hat-trick that included wins over Mr Miller and King Pedro. Those are strong references for Perisher dropping back into a BM78, while Shannen Llewellyn's 3kg claim provides further relief.
The rise straight to 2000m is substantial, but his latest European win came over this distance and the placement looks ideal.
12. Koolibah did some of her best work late first-up and can settle closer from barrier three as she gets out to 2000m. She carries very little weight after the claim and has scope to improve second-up.
7. Botanical Boy had been building nicely before winning at Warwick Farm on September 23, then was particularly strong through the line over 1800m on October 7. His subsequent trial also suggested he is ready for this trip.
11. Cavalry should be approaching peak fitness now and has the benefit of already having a distance run under the belt.
Selections: 2-12-7-11
Race 6 - E Security Group Handicap Tips (1300m)
The interesting runner first-up is 11. Just Maz, who showed plenty of ability in her first preparation.
There was a strong opinion of her before she won on debut at Canterbury in January despite doing plenty wrong, and she completed a double after a freshen-up at Warwick Farm before ending the campaign with a second.
She has had three trials leading into this return, including two in August and another on October 19, suggesting there may have been a minor interruption along the way. The setup is the query, but she may ultimately prove the best horse in this field and comes from a yard with a good fresh record.
16. Sylph is first emergency here and is also accepted for the final race. The 1300m could suit after her latest Group 3 effort, although connections have the option of waiting for the shorter race later on the card, where the tempo should suit.
4. Beside The Ocean has raced well without getting all the favours this preparation and carries 4kg less than last start. The slight drop in distance also suits.
13. Shotgun Bella has hardly put a hoof wrong in her career and looks one of the better roughies to include.
Selections: 11-16-4-13
Race 7 - The Russell Balding Stakes Tips (1300m)
The Russell Balding is a difficult race to attack with several runners backing up from major spring targets, and 10. Jokers Grin is the speculative one at a price.
He had several setbacks before making his stable debut for Chris Waller and improved from that run before going a month between starts into the Sydney Stakes. Getting to 1300m looks suitable for a big horse who is at his best when able to build momentum outside runners.
Barrier nine gives Zac Purton the opportunity to find that room and there is enough upside there to make him interesting at longer odds.
8. Headwall was one of the better beaten runners in The Everest, where he was third-up. He had also produced an unlucky first-up run behind Tempted in the Concorde Stakes. The 1300m is the query, but is dangerous if he can be saved for one short sprint.
1. Jimmysstar won this race last year and, although less consistent since, captured the Manikato Stakes only two runs ago. The rise to 1300m may suit after his Everest effort.
12. Yellow Brick is the blowout. His return was better than it reads after racing in an inferior section of the track and he was a Group 3 winner before the spell.
Selections: 10-8-1-12
Race 8 - Asahi Super Dry Golden Eagle Tips (1500m)
All eyes will be on 16. Sheza Alibi, who remains the clear horse to beat despite an unconventional preparation that sees her drop from 2000m third-up to 1500m fourth-up.
The Might And Power Stakes developed into a far stronger staying test than anticipated, with Land Legend setting a relentless tempo before breaking the Caulfield 2000m track record. Sheza Alibi was beaten as a short-priced favourite but picked up strongly late, finishing ahead of Birdman, who had previously beaten Cosmic Crusader in the Underwood Stakes and subsequently ran second in the Cox Plate.
Kingswood finished fourth in the same race before winning the Caulfield Cup seven days later, so the form could hardly be stronger.
The drop back to 1500m presents a different challenge, but Sheza Alibi has already established herself among the country's better gallopers. She has twice won at Group 1 level at Randwick and barrier six gives Luke Nolen options aboard a tactically versatile mare. Everything about the preparation suggests this has been the major spring target.
18. Within The Law make some appealat a much bigger price. She resumed with an excellent fifth in the Silver Eagle after drifting in betting, racing on inferior ground towards the inside before producing some of the strongest closing work of the race. The rise to 1500m second-up suits and barrier three gives Rachel King plenty of options.
15. Amazing Journey is the wildcard on Australian debut for Ciaron Maher. Saffie Osborne has ridden him to three of his five career wins, including his latest Ascot success, and travels to Sydney for the ride. His two local trials have been encouraging and barrier 15 need not be disastrous over this Randwick starting point.
4. Regal Award is a roughie to respect. He was below his best in the Toorak Handicap after a strong first-up third in the Rupert Clarke Stakes, and the slight drop in trip should suit. He also should have won his only previous Randwick appearance.
Selections: 16-18-15-4
Race 9 - Sydney Gold Cup Tips (2000m)
14. Barrengarry has been scratched from the Golden Eagle for this and the placement makes plenty of sense.
The lightly raced four-year-old won his first two starts this preparation before being narrowly denied by Anthracite over 2000m at Rosehill on October 10. That race set up better for the winner, while Barrengarry still finished strongly enough to suggest another staying run would bring him on.
He gets in on the 53kg minimum and has already built a strong record from just eight starts. Against several higher-rated horses who have struggled to win recently, he looks ready to peak.
6. Travolta has had a slightly interrupted preparation but his latest trial was encouraging. He remains capable of being competitive at this level when things fall his way.
1. Kovalica has been racing better than the results suggest in stronger company and finally draws a favourable gate in barrier two. Nash Rawiller going aboard is another significant positive.
10. Anthracite is flying, having won his past two starts, including that Rosehill 2000m contest. He remains down in the weights and makes his own luck on speed.
Selections: 14-6-1-10
Race 10 - Catanach's Jewellers Handicap Tips (1100m)
There should be plenty of speed in the last, which could play directly into the hands of 12. Super Infinity.
The Tim Donnelly-trained gelding returned with a strong synthetic victory before finishing runner-up at Dubbo when back on turf, and has since completed a trial. He gets into this metropolitan assignment with only 55.5kg and barrier 13 allows Ashley Morgan to let him find his feet before producing one late run.
8. Whatalegacy beat Fierce first-up from a lengthy break and that form has since held up in this grade. He can forgive the Warwick Farm defeat last time after being pressured in front with 60.5kg second-up, and he drops 4kg here.
2. Annie's Rose has been a profitable mare for us and has produced two strong wins this preparation. She has lacked the required room in her two other runs and comes back from Group 3 company, although barrier one means she will again need the gaps to appear.
11. Nullarbor Jane is the bolter from the trials, having worked superbly in two October heat wins ahead of her return. She handles all surfaces.
