A convincing victory over 1600m at Taree last month suggests Purple Haze is ready to progress further, with the Adam Duggan-trained gelding looking well placed to record consecutive wins in Sunday's Class 1 and Maiden Plate.

The son of Press Statement scored by a length and a half on a Soft 7 surface, quickening strongly to secure his maiden victory after resuming with a runner-up finish at Port Macquarie in September.

That performance demonstrated his effectiveness over the mile, while his previous efforts on rain-affected tracks suggest conditions should pose no concerns, even if further showers arrive before Sunday's meeting.

Barrier 11 presents a challenge, although the six-year-old has previously performed well when ridden patiently, giving Ashley Morgan the option to settle back rather than become involved in an early battle for position.

Morgan partnered Purple Haze to victory at Taree and has enjoyed success at Muswellbrook throughout 2026, with the pair appearing capable of overcoming the wide draw and adding another win to the gelding's record.

A return to Muswellbrook could spark an improved performance from Whittello Sun, who has shown an affinity for the course and recorded his only career victory here during his previous preparation.

The four-year-old finished fourth on debut at this venue before breaking through second-up over 1280m, scoring by just under half a length on Soft ground and demonstrating his ability to perform under testing conditions.

He subsequently produced competitive efforts in two of his next three appearances before ending the preparation with a sixth at Warren in June, with that form suggesting he can measure up in this company when circumstances suit.

Two trials have provided a foundation for his return, while the drop back in distance should be manageable given the son of Sebring Sun performed creditably over shorter trips during the early stages of his career.

His previous success at Muswellbrook and encouraging fresh profile make him worth considering at attractive odds, particularly with a return to familiar surroundings offering an opportunity to reproduce his stronger performances.

Muswellbrook Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 8 Blue Dane

Three consecutive top-three finishes this preparation have Blue Dane racing in consistent form, and the seven-year-old mare looks well suited to returning to winning form in Sunday's Benchmark 58.

The Shaun Harvey-trained daughter of Dane Shadow has made her past two appearances at Muswellbrook, including a runner-up finish over this course and distance last month when beaten just under two and a half lengths.

That effort came in a similar contest on Good ground and has since received a form boost, with the fifth-place finisher subsequently winning at Newcastle, adding further substance to the performance.

Although her three appearances this campaign have all been on firm surfaces, Blue Dane has shown versatility throughout her career and should be capable of handling the forecast Soft 5 conditions if the track does not improve.

Apprentice Liberty Smyth retains the ride after partnering the mare in her previous two starts, and with barrier six providing a reasonable starting position, her recent consistency and proven course form make her a leading contender.
