Ascot hosts another major Saturday of Perth racing on October 31, with the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes and Asian Beau Stakes headlining an intriguing nine-race program.

Mrs Mac's Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Ascot Value Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Storm Away

A strong early tempo could set things up for Storm Away in Saturday's 1100m handicap, with the Mitchell Pateman-trained gelding capable of producing a powerful finish if Patrick Carbery can find the right cover from barrier 11.

The four-year-old showed considerable promise earlier in his career, winning consecutive races before returning from a spell with two placings, including a strong third over 1200m at Ascot in March.

His form subsequently tapered off, and the application of bar plates towards the end of his last preparation suggested there may have been some hoof-related concerns, although the gelding still managed a respectable fifth at Northam over 1000m on June 18 when beaten less than two lengths.

Importantly, the bar plates come off for Saturday's resumption, with a tongue tie added and blinkers replacing winkers, while an October 19 trial at Lark Hill has provided a foundation for the gelding to produce a strong fresh performance.

The wide barrier is not ideal, but with plenty of speed engaged through runners including Delzee, Scream and Anaconda Jones, there is a reasonable prospect of a genuinely run race, which could allow Storm Away to finish over the top at attractive odds.

Tabtouch - Placid Ark Prelude Tips (Race 6)

Ascot Best Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Afireofgidgeecoals

Afireofgidgeecoals remains the only horse to have defeated Beatty, producing a major upset in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate at Ascot in April, and that outstanding juvenile form makes the Daniel Morton-trained colt the clear horse to beat in Saturday's Placid Ark Prelude.

The son of Too Darn Hot had finished third behind Beatty in the Listed Perth Stakes before reversing the result in the Karrakatta Plate, subsequently finding the smart youngster too strong again when runner-up in the WA Sires' Produce Stakes over 1400m.

Those references continue to strengthen, with Beatty returning from a spell to produce a stylish victory in last Saturday's Belgravia Stakes, reinforcing the quality of the opposition Afireofgidgeecoals has been competing against.

His own October 10 resumption was encouraging despite finishing second, with the colt settling back before recording some of the strongest closing sectionals of the race, suggesting he would appreciate the rise to 1100m with the benefit of that outing.

Lucy Fiore retains the ride, and although barrier nine and the 59kg topweight present challenges, Afireofgidgeecoals has proven class at stakes level and looks capable of taking the necessary improvement second-up to return to winning form.

Tabtouch - Prince Of Wales Stakes Tips (Race 8)

Ascot Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 8 Talkanco

A return to Ascot over 1000m looks an ideal starting point for Talkanco, with the Daniel and Ben Pearce-trained mare resuming after a highly competitive autumn campaign that established her credentials against some very handy sprinters.

The four-year-old produced one of the performances of her career when placing third in the $5 million Quokka in April, finishing behind Jigsaw and Rey Magnerio, before contesting the Group 1 Goodwood at Morphettville and finishing tenth without being beaten by a substantial margin.

There were excuses in that Adelaide performance, with Talkanco forced to race towards the inside on inferior ground before working home reasonably, while her earlier Ascot efforts had shown she was capable of competing at a considerably higher level than ordinary handicap company.

Last season began with an impressive victory over this course and distance against the talented Luana Miss, completing a winning hat-trick that included the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate during her two-year-old season, and an encouraging October 19 trial over 1000m at Lark Hill suggests she is ready to perform fresh.

Brad Parnham takes the ride from barrier one, giving him options early, and with her proven first-up ability, strong Ascot record and favourable draw, Talkanco looks a leading chance of returning to the winner's circle.

Hosemasters - Asian Beau Stakes Tips (Race 9)

Ascot Feature Bet - Race 9 No. 1 Bonjoy

Hot And High is understandably the horse to beat in Saturday's Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes, having recorded seven wins and a narrow second from eight career appearances, although Bonjoy also warrants respect.

The Jason Miller-trained mare returned from a spell with an excellent second in the Group 3 Eurythmic Stakes at Ascot on October 17, settling towards the rear before finishing strongly behind King Of Light, beaten just a narrow margin despite the winner enjoying a more favourable run.

That performance was particularly encouraging given King Of Light has established himself among Western Australia's leading gallopers, while Bonjoy's previous record suggests she is capable of making significant improvement with a run under her belt.

The seven-year-old has won four of her six previous second-up appearances and boasts an imposing Ascot record of eight victories from 20 starts, including numerous strong performances over 1400m, with her ability to produce a big finish making her particularly dangerous when the race unfolds in her favour.

Clint Johnston-Porter retains the ride from barrier two, and although Bonjoy rises to 59kg and concedes 2.5kg to Hot And High, she has the class and finishing ability to make this a race, with an each-way quote available.
