Victorian based syndicator Dream Thoroughbreds have purchased German import, four-year-old gelding, Sky Out, for $300,000, aiming him at the 2022 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup, to be trained by leading Australian Group 1 training partnership Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

By 2007 German Derby winner Adlerflug, he is out of a winning Monsun mare, and the Monsun bloodline has produced three of the last 10 Melbourne Cup winners.

Contesting the 2021 German Derby as a colt, just as his sire did, Sky Out jumped from the outside barrier to lead the field up to the bend, and was only beaten four lengths on the line by subsequent Prix de l'Arc Triomphe runner-up Sisfahan.

Gelded after his three-year-old season, Sky Out returned on April 30 over 2100m at Mulheim Racecourse where he put away his maiden win by seven-lengths, racing near the pace and punishing his rivals over the final 200m.

Dream Thoroughbreds director David Azzopardi believes this gelding's international form lines have to be respected in Australia.

"Sky Out was sourced by international scout Avo Damirdjian of Tried and True Bloodstock who identified the gelding as a stakes class galloper for Australian racing conditions, and watching his replays confirmed for me he was a horse with huge upside," Azzopardi said.

"He is an on pace stayer that can accelerate off a fast speed, suited to firm tracks that will be suited by Australian racing conditions and Australian racing tempos.

Entering Australia with a rating of 78, this allows Sky Out to race through his grades and develop a profile before contesting Australia's prestigious staying events.

"He comes here with a lower rating than his higher priced European rivals but that gives our ownership group opportunities to get some early wins on the board," Azzopardi stated.

"Dream prides itself on getting horses to work through their grades and develop a winning profile and Sky Out is no different.

“Ciaron and David understand our philosophy well and with their various training facilities and locations, they were the right fit for a first international venture."

Dream Thoroughbreds have previously raced in partnership with other imports, one in particular, a UK entire, Fruehling, who’s career was cut short in his prime due to injury. His best result was a fourth placing in the Group Three JRA Cup, but was clearly a stayer with a potential stakes winning future.

"Fruehling gave us a taste of success with international stayers and it’s taken along time to find the right horse again despite looking for a number of years," said Azzopardi.

"There is a real appetite from owners to race a stayer with the ability to compete in the Cups and we had no trouble selling shares in this exciting gelding, already fully sold just days after arriving in Australia.

Dream Thoroughbreds has tasted a lot of success recently with their local Australian purchases, and this international venture now adds another level to this successful syndicator.
