With competitive races scheduled at Ascot, Caulfield, Eagle Farm, Morphettville, and Rosehill, several roughie picks stand out. Key selections include Jazalot at Ascot, who showcases promising form despite a lack of recent wins, and Zuppa Inglese at Caulfield, who is bouncing back stronger this season. Saturday racing serves up a wide-ranging program across the country, with competitive fields and plenty of depth beyond the obvious market leaders.

For punters looking to get creative alongside Saturday’s Best Bets, this week’s Roughies highlight runners with strong underlying form, positive setups, and profiles that suggest they can outperform their prices if conditions fall their way.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 6 No. 10 Jazalot

Although he has not won since an eye-catching debut success in March last year, Jazalot remains lightly raced and retains upside.

Outside of a plain run on December 17, the gelding has been finishing his races off well without much luck.

He recorded the fastest last 400m in each of his past two starts, with market support also evident through his January Bunbury runs.

This is a rise in grade, but with upside comparable to any rival and relief down to the 54kg minimum, he looks capable of running a bold race.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 5 No. 10 Zuppa Inglese

The 1170m first-up proved a touch sharp, but Zuppa Inglese still produced a solid effort when finishing second behind Hotspur Reale.

That form has since stood up, with Hotspur Reale unlucky when beaten at Cranbourne last week.

She went one better second-up at Werribee and now looks a stronger filly than during her three-run winter campaign.

Back against her own age group and down in the weights, she appears well placed to continue progressing.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 8 No. 10 Red Defcon

While her overall strike-rate reads poorly, Red Defcon has been competitive on multiple occasions in stronger company.

Two of her three career wins came back-to-back last year, breaking a long drought and restoring confidence.

After just an even return at Listed level, the mare made ground late for third at Doomben on January 17.

She recorded the fastest last 600m of the entire program in an on-speed dominated race, making her a value runner again here.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 1 No. 2 Mikki Tango

Mikki Tango was sent out at big odds first-up and outperformed the price when finishing third in a metro race that has since produced two winners.

That was a strong fresh effort, and it saw the gelding well backed next time for a Murray Bridge maiden on January 21.

There was merit to that fifth-of-fourteen when back and wide throughout, with the race shape and positioning working against him.

Stripping fitter again and drawing kinder here, he looks capable of improving further.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 2 No. 12 Hazel Jean

We were with Hazel Jean at double-figure odds in the January 16 Midway, and there was merit to the run when finishing fourth.

She made late ground in that race and now gets fitter over a longer trip and from a kinder draw, giving her the chance to settle closer.

The mare was flat second-up prior to that but was also unsuited in a leader-dominated race.

That fresh Canterbury effort recorded the second-fastest closing sectionals of the program and that race has since produced four winners, including Listed scorer Caffe Florian.
