Midway Handicap Tips (Race 2)
Rosehill Roughie - Race 2 No. 12 Hazel Jean
We were with Hazel Jean at a double-figure quote in the January 16 Midway and there was merit to the run, with the mare making inroads late to finish fourth.
She now gets fitter over a longer trip and from a kinder draw, which gives her the chance to settle closer.
The mare was flat prior to that run when second-up, but was also unsuited in a leader-dominated race.
Through her summer resumption, the four-year-old recorded the second-fastest closing sectionals of the December 12 Canterbury program.
That race has since produced four winners, including stablemate Caffe Florian, who was a Listed winner at her next start.
Widden Stakes Tips (Race 4)
Rosehill Favourite - Race 4 No. 9 Miss Scandal
In her first trial, Miss Scandal arguably worked better than Incognito, the Breeders’ Plate winner who resumes as an odds-on favourite in the Canonbury Stakes.
We will see that form earlier on the card in Race 3.
It was another quiet hit-out when third under a hold in her most recent appearance.
James McDonald has stayed in the saddle for both public showings and she was good through the line under no pressure.
The main each-way danger could be debutant Chilly Girl, who showed improvement between trials and is likely to land on the speed from gate two.
Precise Air Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Rosehill Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Roselyn’s Star
Roselyn’s Star’s worst run came second-up early in the season, but that was a much different setup.
Two weeks prior, he had covered ground in a brave return from a near 500-day absence, which left him flat.
It was also a much shorter turnaround when resuming on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast, where he was beaten as a popular favourite.
He still made ground as runner-up behind an all-the-way winner who pinched a break, and Roselyn’s Star still put a decent margin on third.
With less depth here and James McDonald aboard, the O’Shea and Charlton-trained galloper can atone.
JRA Plate Group 3 Tips (Race 8)
Rosehill Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Disneck
It is not a big field for this Group 3 sprint, with just eight runners accepting, but there is still good speed engaged.
The Instructor, Zarastro and Willaidow are all likely to be involved in the early action.
If they are able to overdo it up front, that could set it up for a strong closer in Disneck.
He recorded his first first-up win on January 10 when successful at Flemington and carries a similar weight here.
Firm ground is key, with his two biggest defeats last campaign both coming on wet tracks, and he arguably should have won this race last year when run as the Southern Cross Stakes.
Kia Ora Bloodlines To Headlines Handicap Tips (Race 10)
Rosehill Value Bet - Race 10 No. 13 Nepo Baby
The debut victory at Scone rated well and, as a result, we were with Nepo Baby at start two despite being an early three-year-old filly taking on more seasoned opposition in a provincial BM64.
The Archibald-trained galloper handled it with relative ease, recording a soft win.
Connections resisted the urge to push on and instead went straight to the paddock on a high.
With a rating of 64, she could have been placed softer if they wanted to build a progressive type through lower grades, so this aggressive placement off a trial win is an encouraging sign.
She gets right down in the weights with 52kg and looks dangerous fresh.
