Saturday's racing schedule features compelling line-ups across Caulfield, Rosehill, Morphettville, Ascot, and Doomben. Key value runners include Snazzler at Ascot, poised to make an impact in extended distances, and Mr Epozino at Caulfield, whose strong follow-up showing at Pakenham suggests a bright prospect. Colourful Emperor at Doomben is also noted for resurgence with fresh trials indicating potential. A Samurai Mind at Morphettville offers promise, especially first-up over a mile, while at Rosehill, Cilacap could outshine competitors, given its solid previous trial performances.

Saturday’s racing features competitive programs across Caulfield, Rosehill, Morphettville, Ascot and Doomben, and we’ve highlighted a value runner from each meeting in this week’s Roughies piece.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 6 No. 1 Snazzler

Little was expected early this prep from Snazzler given he has no prior first or second-up wins and was prepared as a middle-distance type last campaign.

He had two runs within seven days before being specked at odds in the Ascot Mile on January 31, where he recorded the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m of the race.

That performance suggested he was building towards a peak and ready to rise in distance.

The step to 2200m suits given he progressed from 1600m to 2000m when runner-up last winter before winning over this trip in this grade carrying half a kilo more than he does here.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 11 Mr Epozino

Mr Epozino appeals at an each-way price in an open contest after being specked at long odds for a Seymour debut victory.

There was plenty to like about his follow-up third at Pakenham when settling off the speed and navigating traffic before attacking the line strongly.

He recorded the fastest last 200m of that event, highlighting his closing strength.

The rise to 1800m looks ideal and he profiles as a progressive type in this grade.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 10 No. 8 Colourful Emperor

Colourful Emperor failed to fire in his first Australian preparation, but he bled from both nostrils in his latest run and subsequently had the mandatory time off.

Prepared by the Ryan & Alexiou stable, which is noted for producing fresh winners, he resumes off two encouraging Sydney trials.

The latest hit-out came in a fast-run heat won by Tonkin, which reads as a solid reference.

If he is to produce his best in Australia, first-up in a modest Brisbane set weights contest may be the right scenario.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 8 No. 10 A Samurai Mind

Still lightly raced for a five-year-old, A Samurai Mind resumes from a long spell and has trialled well in two February heats.

While he shaped as a staying type earlier in his career, his form suggests he is more effective at a mile.

He has two first-up wins over this trip, showing he can sprint well fresh.

This is a competitive race, but many of his rivals are exposed and he brings genuine upside.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 9 No. 3 Cilacap

Grahame Begg’s decision to send Cilacap north warrants respect given the Melbourne options available.

She was hard to miss late in a February 9 trial win and appears to have returned in strong order.

Her seventh in the Christmas Stakes reads better than it looks after recording the fastest last 200m of the December 26 event.

While 1300m may be slightly short of her ideal trip, she quickly handled the rise to stakes level last preparation and shapes as the each-way value despite Lazzura being a deserving favourite.
