Racing And Sports Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Rosehill Favourite - Race 5 No. 2 Lord Penman
An interesting horse on resumption is this ex-New Zealand-based galloper, who could be a Doncaster Mile hope if there is any progression from his first Australian campaign.
That preparation began with an eye-catching 1200m performance at Rosehill, a trip that was on the short side, and resuming at 1400m brings him right into calculations, although his trials have been hard to decipher.
He was looking for the paddock by the time of The Golden Eagle, but the prior efforts in the Epsom Handicap and Silver Eagle were both encouraging.
Lord Penman should be favourite off that exposed form, and this BM100 is comfortably the best winning set-up he has seen in Australia.
If he is anywhere near his best fresh, the profile suggests he is the one they have to beat.
Chandon Silver Slipper Stakes Tips (Race 6)
Rosehill Roughie - Race 6 No. 8 Dr Hook
A well-bred colt by Too Darn Hot, Dr Hook is out of dual Group winner Sylvia’s Mother and is also from the same family as Bel Mer, a Group 1-winning sprinter.
Following a trial win, the Team Hawkes-trained juvenile was favourite on debut on November 29 and appeared to track the leading brigade nicely.
However, he failed to let down when the sprint went on and greenness was evident late in a fifth-of-nine finish.
Spelled after that first raceday appearance, Dr Hook has again trialled well, the latest with blinkers in effect when sprinting sharply to win a 900m Rosehill heat on February 12.
He needs to get to the level quickly against more furnished rivals, but he could be the forgotten youngster here.
Kia Ora Hobartville Stakes Tips (Race 8)
Rosehill Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 1 Autumn Boy
Do we just back in his class?
While unlikely to be right at his top fresh against fitter main rivals who have race fitness, he also has comfortably the best exposed form and remains lightly raced.
He won his first two starts, the second a Listed triumph over Sheza Alibi, who rounded out her spring with comfortable back-to-back Group victories.
His last fresh try was a closing second to Sixties, a stablemate that he was giving fitness and 3.5kg to, and after two big wins to start his prep, Sixties is now a leading Australian Guineas hope.
Autumn Boy then bounced back from a Golden Rose flop to take out his target, the Caulfield Guineas, and that form keeps stacking up through Observer.
Vinery Stud Millie Fox Stakes Tips (Race 9)
Rosehill Value Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Cilacap
Grahame Begg is one of the most astute trainers there is and, despite there being many Melbourne options around, we have to respect him sending Cilacap north.
She was hard to miss late in a February 9 trial win and looks to have returned in good order.
Cilacap has been freshened since a seventh-of-nine in the Christmas Stakes, a run that was much better than it reads after recording the fastest last 200m of that December 26 event.
The four-year-old quickly handled the rise to stakes company in her second campaign and, while 1300m is still a touch shorter than ideal, there is a platform to improve.
Lazzura is a deserving favourite and perhaps also worth a wager in this race, but the each-way value is with Cilacap.
Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap Tips (Race 10)
Rosehill Best Bet - Race 10 No. 9 Tonkin
Anthony and Sam Freedman opt for a Sydney resumption with Tonkin, a Godolphin four-year-old who completed a Victorian jump-out on January 28 before a Rosehill trial on February 12, a comfortable win in sharp time over 900m.
She brings a consistent record of four wins and three seconds from seven starts.
While her sole 1100m attempt resulted in a runner-up finish, it was also a brave one, sticking on in a fast-run event taken out by the smart Persian Spirit.
That form reads well given Persian Spirit has since measured up in stronger company and is not without a sniff in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.
There is other on-speed pressure in this field, but it is not a deep race for the benchmark and Tonkin will be making her own luck with 53kg.
