Caulfield Tips February 21

Race 1 - 12:15PM Whispering Angel Handicap Tips (1100m)

Staying at 1100m is perhaps a query for 12. Expulsion; however, the Godolphin filly is improving.

After a strong fresh win, the three-year-old was a beaten favourite here on January 24, but there was merit in the run, making ground in an on-speed dominated race for third and recording the fastest last 400m of the meeting.

11. Verdoux is lightly raced for a five-year-old and his only time finishing out of the money came up the Flemington straight. He has worked in three strong jump-out heats leading into this return.

4. Castellar has been going well for the new yard and improved off a solid fresh run to salute here on January 31.

The honest 5. Codigo is better placed back in trip and grade. Blinkers go on.

Verdict: Small plays on Expulsion and Verdoux.

Race 2 - 12:45PM Sportsbet Zeditave Stakes Tips (1200m)

Clinton McDonald has eleven winners from 29 starters over summer and Ben Melham has been aboard for seven of the last eight.

They combine with 2. Rosberg, who delivered on early hype when saluting at Listed level on debut. He failed at start two, but there were excuses, being shin sore and lame. Blinkers go on and the jump-outs have been sound.

This is harder again for 4. Esmahli, but respect his race fitness against the main threats who are early in their campaigns. He overcame trouble in Sydney to make it three from four.

Last year’s Blue Diamond winner 1. Devil Night didn’t fire in spring but must be respected on exposed form.

3. Pallaton was plain fresh, although he is suited back against his own age. Does he run 1200m?

Verdict: Backing Rosberg. Saver on Esmahli.

Race 3 - 1:20PM Sportsbet Victoria Gold Cup Tips (2000m)

We were on 2. Immediacy at a huge price first-up, where he was just edged out late by Light Infantry Man over 1600m.

There is no big price this time around; however, it is also a softer option at 2000m in a weaker field, and he was a second-up winner last campaign off a return nowhere near as strong as the February 7 performance.

1. Whisky On The Hill comes out of the same race and caught the eye from back in the field, recording the fastest last 600m of the Carlyon Cup.

4. Taken has built a record and bounced back from a second-up Supernova flop. This is his first try at 2000m.

6. Go Daddy was poor in spring, but European imports often take a prep to acclimatise. He looks wound up from his recent jump-out work.

Verdict: Immediacy appeals and a peanut each-way on Go Daddy.

Race 4 - 1:55PM Stow Storage Autumn Classic Tips (1800m)

At an each-way price in an open race is 11. Mr Epozino, who was specked at long odds via a Seymour debut triumph.

There was plenty to like about the follow-up third at Pakenham, when off the speed and in traffic before getting clear late and attacking the line with the race-fastest last 200m. He is racing as if 1800m will suit.

4. Single Choice just missed Xtra Rush in his return and that Cranbourne winner is four from four. An in-form Damian Lane takes over and the gelding carries 3.5kg less from the fresh run.

9. Kaye Jay was brave on debut before a Sandown win. The second and third from that race filled the quinella of a Pakenham maiden on Thursday.

8. Itazura is back against his own age and the last-start third supports the rise in trip here.

Verdict: Each-way on Mr Epozino. Single Choice for the win.

Race 5 - 2:30PM Sportsbet Angus Armanasco Stakes Tips (1400m)

Her last defeat in Queensland was a second to Autumn Boy, the subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner.

On debut for Moody & Coleman, 1. Sheza Alibi was third behind a smart Tentyris, and two comfortable victories followed, including a Sandown Guineas romp. She is clearly the class horse, though Ole Dancer’s “trial” last week is in the back of the mind from the same yard.

2. Salty Pearl is very genuine. She doesn't have the brilliance of Ole Dancer, but the Group 2 winner can cash in if the favourite is vulnerable. The return was good and getting to 1400m is a positive.

An improver at big odds could be 7. Exit. She was set a task fresh and the raw potential last winter suggested she would furnish as a three-year-old.

Off no public trials, respect the market late with dual stakes winner 3. Spicy Lu.

Verdict: Sheza Alibi the obvious, but very short at sub $1.50. Exit may be the value for exotics.

Race 6 - 3:05PM Catanach's Jewellers Mannerism Stakes Tips (1400m)

This is an opportunity for 5. Damask Rose to break her Australian duck, the ex-Kiwi who should relish the extra 200m second-up.

She got the scalp of Evaporate in her last New Zealand win, which reads superbly for this mares’ race, and her second-up Toorak Handicap form from spring is another strong reference for a race of this strength.

Connections are looking to strike while the iron is hot with last Saturday’s Tressady Stakes winner 4. Paradise City, and she is worth a look in similar company while up and firing.

1. Benagil didn’t come up in spring, which was perhaps not a surprise given the long three-year-old season and travel. She's classy when right.

9. Bossy Benita was third in the Bellmaine Stakes behind Damask Rose and covered ground in that effort.

Verdict: Damask Rose finds her race. Best Bet.

Race 7 - 3:40PM Henley Homes Futurity Stakes Tips (1400m)

Having won her last eight appearances as a three-year-old, including three Group 1's, 7. Treasurethe Moment looked a potential star heading into last spring.

There was added confidence after she comfortably handled her first weight-for-age attempt via a Memsie Stakes romp over this track-and-trip against a stronger field than she faces here, with Fangirl and Mr Brightside among the well-beaten brigade before winning at their next starts — Fangirl defeating a field that included Ceolwulf, while Mr Brightside defeated Via Sistina, who went on to win two more Group 1's.

9. Leica Lucy won six of her first seven in New Zealand, including the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks, before being competitive in the Australian Oaks, and her first-up run in the Makybe Diva Stakes — where she recorded the fastest last 400m of the entire program — followed by two Group 1 placings suggests she is capable of producing a bold fresh showing. Her last trial was strong.

6. Feroce resumed with a runner-up finish in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes and has a strong second-up record, highlighted by a Group 1 Australian Guineas triumph and a Sir Rupert Clarke placing.

3. Evaporate can take a run to hit peak fitness, which is the query first-up, but his spring form reads well and there is still upside.

Verdict: Treasurethe Moment (win) and Leica Lucy (each-way).

Race 8 - 4:15PM Sportsbet Blue Diamond Stakes Tips (1200m)

Can 5. Guest House put it all together here?

The colt was again his own worst enemy in the colts and geldings Blue Diamond Prelude, which was run more than two lengths faster than the fillies’ renewal on February 7. He knuckled at the start and raced keenly, yet was beaten only a length despite those manners, and he should get every chance to settle from a soft draw.

3. Closer To Free took out that key lead-up event on debut, settling outside a leader who dropped out before relishing the fight late and pulling away from both Guest House and Eternal Warrior.

2. Alibaba was unlucky in the Inglis Millennium after winning a Blue Diamond Preview and, while the wide alley is not ideal, it is manageable from the chute start.

4. Big Sky heads a competitive market. The 1200m is the main query off two all-the-way 1000m wins, but he has been dominant.

Verdict: It’s an extremely open Blue Diamond.

Race 9 - 4:55PM Sportsbet Oakleigh Plate Tips (1100m)

Could the Anthony & Sam Freedman yard have both the best three-year-old sprinting colt and filly in the country after Saturday?

The stable already has Tentyris, the Coolmore Stud Stakes winner who created a big impression winning the Black Caviar Lightning last Saturday, and now it is 14. Point Barrow’s turn to prove herself away from her own age and sex with just 50kg, having won four and run an unlucky third from five starts last campaign, and if there is natural progression this preparation, she will take beating.

10. Geegees Mistruth is a four-time stakes winner who has placed in four of six attempts at Caulfield, including an unlucky first-up third here on January 26.

2. Jedibeel drops back from weight-for-age company after competing against elite sprinters since his Group 2 Challenge Stakes win last March, has strong first-up stats at 1100m, and gets the services of an in-form Damian Lane.

13. Gallant Son now has confidence with two benchmark wins to open the preparation, and third-up last campaign he beat all bar Reserve Bank, who later defeated Giga Kick in The Goodwood.

Verdict: It could be Point Barrow’s to lose. Each-way hopes are Geegees Mistruth and Jedibeel.

Race 10 - 5:35PM Lamaro's Hotel Handicap (1400m)

It’s a very open finale to the Blue Diamond program, with 7. Red Galaxy one to include at a double-figure quote.

A big, lightly raced five-year-old who has ability, he has been freshened since a straight-track flop and blinkers go on. The prior Geelong resumption was terrific and he could measure up.

1. Harry’s Yacht didn’t run a mile two starts back but has otherwise been competitive. The quinella were both fence-in-run on January 31, adding merit to his third when flushed out early.

No world-beater, but 3. Kings Valley is a solid trier who could figure first-up at this level. Lead-up work has been fine.

Surprised that 12. Stealth Of Night is so short, but she has never missed the top two and will push forward.

Verdict: Small each-way on Red Galaxy in a tough finale.
