Saturday’s Moonee Valley meeting showcased several emerging prospects as the spring season heats up, particularly following the Group 1 Moir Stakes. Kings Valley put in a gritty effort and looks set for a fruitful campaign; Rosberg delivered on debut and flagged himself as a major spring player; Planet Red lost his unbeaten record but showed stamina for longer trips; while Skybird endured a luckless run but remains a sprinting prospect to monitor. Punters should keep these names in their blackbook for upcoming feature races.

Our Moonee Valley blackbookers from Saturday, September 6, have been identified following a strong spring lead-up program that featured the Group 1 Moir Stakes.

Several runners caught the eye across the card, including an honest import, a much-hyped debutant, and a resuming mare with bigger targets in sight.

Below are the horses to follow out of the meeting.

Race 3 - Kings Valley (2nd): The Ciaron Maher-trained import resumed with a solid fourth-place finish in a good form race at Caulfield and was down in grade for this BM84 assignment.

While a decent market push wasn't landed, there was still merit to the narrow defeat. He was only second-up against a hard-fit winner who enjoyed a soft run and carried 5kg less.

Not sure on his ceiling just yet, but Kings Valley held form deep into his last preparation and looks the type who could develop into a nice country cups horse this season.
Race 6 - Rosberg (1st) & Planet Red (4th): The debutant Rosberg lived up to the hype, putting away a useful field at his first race day appearance. He’s since shortened in markets for some spring features and looks a colt of promise.

Planet Red had his unbeaten run ended via this hat-trick bid, but he lost no admirers. Sticking to 1200m worked against him in a strong three-year-old affair, yet he still fought on well.

The form has stacked up from his first two wins and, looking ahead to races like the Caulfield Guineas, Planet Red shapes as the potential middle-distance prospect to emerge from this field.
Race 9 - Skybird (6th): A late notable market mover in the Moir Stakes, the resuming mare simply couldn’t get a look at them when it counted as she was badly held up.

Her autumn campaign was aborted due to injury, but she had already shown her brilliance with a dazzling Black Caviar Lightning performance before the setback. Despite stretching to 1600m in her first prep, she’s been kept to sprint trips.

Skybird has both brilliance and X-factor, and looks a genuine contender over the spring. Outside of Ka Ying Rising and a few other Everest fancies, she could be an early smokie for Sydney’s feature sprint.
