Glorious Goodwood 2026 - Day 4 Preview

Race 1 - Goodwood Handicap Tips

Of all the handicaps staged during Glorious Goodwood, this is the race I get least involved in. I usually have a small each-way play at a big price, and 15. Kentucky River is my speculative selection this year.

The son of Camelot progressed quickly when stepped up to staying trips on the Flat by Ollie Sangster. Kentucky River was narrowly beaten by the mid-90-rated Belgravian on his first attempt at two miles before recording an RPR of 91 when cruising to a seven-length victory at Pontefract last August.

Kentucky River then joined Olly Murphy's stable and returns to the Flat after winning two of his last three starts over hurdles.

After eight years of flag starts, organisers have reverted to starting stalls, and Kentucky River's berth in stall 18 could prove a blessing, considering four winners emerged from wide draws between 2011 and 2017.

Race 2 - Thoroughbred Stakes Tips

He's not much of a price, but it's almost impossible to look beyond 6. Talk Of New York in this Group 3.

Charlie Appleby's rising star bolted up in the Heron Stakes at Sandown before many fancied him to cause an upset in the St James's Palace Stakes. William Buick's mount raced far too keenly at Royal Ascot, which proved costly, as Talk Of New York couldn't quite match Bow Echo and Gstaad for finishing speed.

Bow Echo and Gstaad fought out the Sussex Stakes on day two here at Goodwood, while fourth-placed Power Blue has since bolted up in a Group 2. Catullus should ensure a genuine tempo from stall five, which ought to help his market-leading stablemate settle from gate four.

Talk Of New York is very difficult to oppose.

Race 3 - Golden Mile Tips

17. Tribal Chief blew the start when well fancied for this handicap 12 months ago and could only finish sixth behind Rhoscolyn. David Menuisier's five-year-old made amends with a course-and-distance victory the following month before opening this season with eye-catching thirds in both the Lincoln and Victoria Cup.

Again at Sandown last time, the start proved costly for Tribal Chief, who gave the field a huge head start before finishing sixth behind Indalo. I'm sure Menuisier has had one eye on the Golden Mile all season, and Jamie Spencer takes over in the saddle. I'd have preferred the stable to be in better form, but if either of Menuisier's runners performs well on Thursday, Tribal Chief's odds could shorten quickly.

Spencer will appreciate drawing stall four, with nine of the last 11 winners coming from barrier five or lower. However, horses have won from stalls 18 and 21 in recent years, so I'm also keen to back 7. Two Tempting from stall 15.

Jonny Portman's seven-year-old hasn't been seen since the end of the all-weather season. Two Tempting enjoyed a consistent winter on synthetic tracks, winning at Kempton in November before posting a string of placed efforts.

Two Tempting bumped into Blue Rc, now rated 104, at Southwell, and The Long King, now rated 102, at Wolverhampton while conceding plenty of weight to both. Rob Hornby's mount also finished third from a wide draw in the Listed Tandridge Stakes behind the odds-on Chancellor.

Despite that excellent form, Two Tempting remains on a mark of 100. Portman had this race in mind last season before rain arrived, and with fast ground, a turning track and an excellent fresh record, his gelding looks capable of outrunning his price.

Race 4 - King George Qatar Stakes Tips

My usual approach in these sprint races is to side with something at a price, and there are several who appeal. I've landed on 14. Argentine Tango, who returns to Group 2 company after an impressive Listed victory at Ayr.

Tim Easterby's sprinter enjoyed an excellent juvenile season, winning the Hilary Needler at Beverley and the Empress Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket. Tom Eaves' mount then finished second to Lady Iman in the Molecomb Stakes here before her form tapered off during the autumn.

Argentine Tango wasn't beaten far on her return in France before failing to see out six furlongs in the Chelmer here at Goodwood. Easterby's filly was then slightly outpaced when sixth in both the Temple Stakes and Scurry Stakes before bouncing back with victory in the Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes.

Tom Eaves will have to negotiate stall one on Friday, but three of the last nine winners have emerged from the inside gate, and the speedy Swedish raider should provide Argentine Tango with a lovely tow into the race.

Race 5 - Bentinck Conditions Stakes Tips

With Boiling Point, Naqeeb and Galen engaged, it's difficult to see this conditions race being run at a slow tempo. 6. Dividend could capitalise if the pace collapses, provided he bounces back from his disappointing Sandown effort.

Jamie Insole's four-year-old starred in Meydan over the winter, winning two 1800m handicaps before finishing second in the Singspiel Stakes and fifth in the Dubai Turf. Dividend then travelled strongly behind a genuine tempo in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot, staying on well through traffic to finish third behind Map Of Stars.

Kieran Shoemark's mount never fired when last behind Sallaal in the Gala Stakes at Sandown, where his busy Meydan and Ascot campaign may have caught up with him.

Insole has freshened him up with a month between runs, and Dividend is more than capable of figuring in this company.

Race 6 - Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap Tips

This race hasn't been kind to favourites in recent years, with $17, $21 and $23 winners in the last four seasons.

One who appeals at the prices is 10. Super Tuscan, who I backed when I was at Goodwood on John Smith's Cup day.

Eve Johnson Houghton's youngster impressed when storming home from the rear to score at Chepstow before racing too keenly at York, where he faded after leading as Big Cigar swept past to score convincingly.

I'd be surprised if Charlie Bishop wasn't a little more patient on Friday. Eve Johnson Houghton has an excellent record with juveniles at Goodwood, and I'm not ready to give up on this progressive grey.

Race 7 - World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap Tips

It was a bold move by Richard Hannon to throw the three-year-old 2. Pearl River into the John Smith's Cup, and he could bounce back now returning to his own age group.

A winner at Nottingham as a juvenile, Pearl River contested the Blue Riband Trial and London Gold Cup before winning nicely over this trip at York. He then went down fighting to Gone By in the Bibury Cup at Salisbury before taking on seasoned older handicappers just two weeks later in the John Smith's Cup.

His inexperience showed at York as he faded after racing prominently, but Hannon's colt clearly handles a busy campaign and still shapes as a horse with plenty of improvement to come.

A mark of 89 still looks well within his reach.

Race 8 - Fillies' Handicap Tips

Silver Lake dominates the market for this small-field handicap, but I'd much rather side with the progressive 6. Room Fourteen as James Fanshawe's filly chases a fourth win from her last five starts.

Room Fourteen scored on handicap debut at Yarmouth before chasing home future Listed winner Venetia in a high-quality Ascot contest. Fanshawe's filly then returned to winning form at Redcar before producing another comfortable victory at Doncaster.

Room Fourteen also had Nanino Nyati, a winner here earlier this week, more than a length behind her in fourth at Ascot.

Fanshawe's filly still looks capable of further improvement, and the booking of Ryan Moore could prove significant.
