A half-brother to Group 2 winner Reelem In Ruby, Sobine was spruiked early, making his debut in a Future Stars Heat at Cranbourne back in January, a series that generally produces strong form references.

While he failed to fire over 1400m on that occasion, the son of So You Think was well supported late at a big price before being sent to the paddock, returning on the Pakenham synthetic on July 20 after encouraging jump-out work.

Without threatening first-up in a slowly run affair, Sobine made good late ground to record the second-fastest final 400m of the race, suggesting there was plenty of merit in the performance.

Holly Durnan's 3kg claim is another positive, with the apprentice having ridden two winners for the Corstens stable this season while also posting six victories over the winter period.

This isn't a strong maiden and, as one of the least exposed runners in the field with upside, Sobine appeals each-way at a double-figure quote.

Geelong Best Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Charming Deel

Knocking on the door for a fourth career victory is Charming Deel, who has been competitive in all four starts since joining the Tom Dabernig stable, recording three runner-up finishes.

Her only miss of the placings came at Caulfield second-up on May 27 when ridden quieter from a wide draw, but she still produced the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m behind the handy Cooly.

She was then no match for Dark Simba at Bendigo in much stronger company, with that June 13 race already producing two subsequent winners alongside several metropolitan form references.

Despite six weeks between runs, Charming Deel resumed as a well-backed favourite at Warrnambool on July 23, giving a bold sight before a fit and strong wet-tracker Side Piece proved too good, while putting a big space on the third horse.

Linda Meech remains aboard and, with that run under her belt in a race that's no harder, the daughter of Dundeel looks ready to reward her new stable with a deserved breakthrough.

Geelong Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 1 Talkin' Italian

Local trainer Josh Cartwright has quickly found the key to Talkin' Italian, who has impressed in two starts since joining the stable from South Australia.

The son of Star Witness resumed from a lengthy spell with a placing in a 0-66 here on June 19 before improving sharply to bolt in over this course in a Benchmark 62 on July 10.

Although up in the weights, Friday's Benchmark 56 represents a drop in grade and Nadia Daniels' 3kg claim means he rises only 2kg despite contesting an easier race.

With only two runs under his belt since returning from more than a year on the sidelines, the six-year-old should be able to at least hold his form and has proven effective in all conditions.

Daniels has also been in decent touch during July, recording five winners for the month, including two from her past four rides, and she partnered Kazungula to victory at this track on July 10.
