Saturday’s action on April 11 spans five key meetings, with competitive fields at Randwick, Ascot, Caulfield, Doomben and Morphettville creating plenty of openings outside the head of the market.

For those chasing bigger dividends, these roughies work alongside our Saturday’s Best Bets, focusing on runners capable of exceeding expectations at appealing odds.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 9 No. 3 Wynn Las Vegas

There is no knock on the two favourites, Sentimental Legend and Wonderfully Mae, who dominate the market as the WA Oaks winner and Melvista Stakes victor, respectively.

At longer odds, Wynn Las Vegas shapes as the Derby blowout option, although this may come slightly soon for a youngster still learning the caper.

After breaking through impressively second-up as a short-priced favourite, the gelding went on to contest the Melvista Stakes on April 1.

Given he never settled up front, there was merit in sticking on for third of seven, and with the blinkers off for winkers, any improvement over the staying trip keeps him in the mix at value.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 5 Il Patrigno

While unable to figure on last Friday's Ballarat program as a well-backed favourite, Il Patrigno was set a tough task in that April 3 event.

Although beaten, the four-year-old still worked home well without ever seriously threatening.

The gelding remains maiden ineligible despite contesting this Class 3 at set weights, but the field is made up of Class 1 and maiden runners.

Off his narrow Sandown defeat two starts back, when finishing close to fancied runners including Dirty Look, he profiles as a genuine each-way hope at odds.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 7 No. 7 Acres Away

The five-year-old has been competitive in similar company on multiple occasions this preparation.

His only below-par effort came third-up on a Soft 7 at the Gold Coast, where he was still far from disgraced finishing midfield.

Acres Away bounced back with a softer win at Toowoomba last time and now returns to metro company with confidence under his belt.

With a drying track, a strong tempo expected, and Angela Jones staying aboard, the gelding maps for a favourable run and can surprise at a double-figure quote.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 3 No. 3 Zanthron

An honest on-speed performer, Zanthron rarely turns in a poor effort and continues to race consistently.

The gelding looks suited third-up after two solid runs this preparation, where condition has just given out late.

That included a heavily supported effort on March 28, with both runs this prep still rating as pass marks despite not finishing off.

His only time missing the top two from five third-up runs came in August last year when pulling up lame, but otherwise Zanthron has a strong profile at this stage and can take catching.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 10 No. 2 Infancy

Infancy landed the cash at a generous quote in this event last year when defeating a handy pair in Commemorative and Lady Laguna.

The mare has never been suited at Rosehill or on wet tracks, which adds merit to a solid return in The Galaxy when beaten two lengths.

That effort came in tougher conditions than preferred, indicating she has returned in good order this preparation.

With Jason Collett back aboard and conditions more suitable, Infancy profiles as a live knockout chance again at odds.
