Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 7 No. 10 Lyrical Angel

Lyrical Angel is still lightly raced for a five-year-old and showed she had some upside last winter when placing at stakes level over a similar journey, which makes her an interesting roughie in this set-up.

Both of her career wins have come at Belmont, including a strong 2200m victory in March before a spell, and she clearly enjoys this circuit.

She trialled well at 1450m before resuming on July 23 and improved sharply second-up when finishing runner-up after doing plenty of early work in the run.

This assignment is harder than her latest midweek Class 5, but she carries 3kg less here and with natural improvement expected third-up she appeals as a genuine each-way chance.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 8 No. 6 Geegees Mistruth

Geegees Mistruth creates interest at double-figure odds, being six-from-six in Tasmania and showing she could be competitive when tested in Melbourne company last spring.

The Thousand Guineas trip proved too far, but she looks far better suited back at 1200m where her sharp turn-of-foot can be best utilised.

She was given two winter trials ahead of this campaign and in both she travelled strongly with the jockey seemingly swinging off her, which suggests she has returned well.

Resuming at an ideal distance and capable on good or soft going, she presents genuine each-way value.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 4 No. 8 Meaner Than Evil

Meaner Than Evil was specked at odds on debut in a Saturday two-year-old race at Eagle Farm in April, and while he wasn’t able to figure that day, he has shown ability in his work.

He was spelled immediately after and brought back with three winter trials, which included an eye-catching piece in his latest that hinted at genuine talent.

His August 6 return saw him race greenly, as he was urged along to hold a spot and then shifted about in the straight, suggesting he’s still learning his craft.

That experience should bring him on, and with natural progression from more racing, Meaner Than Evil could surprise at a big price.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 3 Ima Shelby

Ima Shelby showed glimpses of talent when prepared by the Hayes team in Victoria, but his career has stalled over the past 12 months where he’s had limited racing and no wins.

He had a short NSW stint with Nathan Doyle that didn’t work out, and he has since found his way to Dylan Caboche’s yard where his last two runs have hinted at a return to form.

After resuming on a Heavy 10 he improved sharply when second-up in BM76 grade, then last start he was honest in a race dominated by Watadeel despite being outclassed.

Now with three runs under the belt, dropping to a 0-66 and getting to the mile, he finds his easiest task in some time and looks a genuine roughie with the right set-up.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 10 No. 2 Disneck

Disneck showed his trademark big finish when resuming at Rosehill on July 19 and has been kept fresh since, with connections wisely waiting for firmer ground.

He pieced together a hat-trick last preparation before being unlucky in Group 3 company where he ran the fastest sectionals of the day, which confirmed his ability at a higher level.

Second-up at 1200m looks a perfect progression, and although he rises in the weights he maps to settle midfield this time rather than dropping right out as he did fresh.

With stakes ambitions later this spring, this race presents as an ideal stepping stone and he has the class to figure late if things open up.
