Caulfield Tips August 30
Race 1 - 12:05PM Sportsbet Get On Now Handicap Tips (1800m)
I’m interested to see how 5. Gilded Water progresses in his second Australian prep, with the import impressing last campaign for Ciaron Maher when recording a winning double, and he could be an early smokie for the Caulfield and/or Melbourne Cup.
Bred by the late Queen Elizabeth II and owned by King Charles III, the five-year-old beat Alalcance on Australian debut, a mare who went on to string together three wins in autumn, before being even more dominant when stepping up to 2400m at Randwick.
10. Haaracaine made the blackbook after his first-up run over 1400m at Caulfield, and while the rise in trip suits, he may still be one run short with 2000–2500m his ideal range.
8. Whisky On The Hill placed in this event last year before recording consecutive Caulfield wins, and he was brave without luck when resuming on August 2.
The blowout could be 9. Chasing Aphrodite, who didn’t handle a quick back-up in April before a spell. Her earlier runs were sound, and she won her most recent jump-out.
Selections: 5,10,8,9.
Race 2 - 12:35PM Stow Robotics Handicap Tips (1400m)
Giving weight to rivals first-up is the main query for 1. On Display, but her class stands out in a BM78 against her own sex, and she has been sound in two August jump-outs.
In her two Adelaide runs before a spell, she was unlucky at big odds in the Group 2 Queen of the South before atoning a week later, while her last soft-track try was much better than the end margin suggested in the Group 2 Typhoon Tracy.
10. Gala Queen is working towards peak fitness and can be forgiven for her last run as a beaten favourite, with a Soft 7 against her. More rain is forecast on an already Soft 5, so they may scratch if downgrades come.
16. Impending Shadow produced the fastest last 200m of a similar race on August 16. She’s fit and relishes wet ground.
4. Raziah can improve second-up at 1400m. The dual New Zealand stakes winner gets winkers reapplied and a tongue tie added.
Selections: 1,10,16,4
Race 3 - 1:10PM Schweppes Handicap Tips (1400m)
15. Jenni The Fox was a blackbooker from her Moonee Valley resumption on August 9, where condition just gave out late under 60kg against fitter sprinters, but it was still a pass mark and she’ll strip fitter.
She rises in grade but drops 6kg from her first-up run, and her last Caulfield 1400m showing was a Group 2 second behind Treasurethe Moment.
13. Capper Thirtynine is edging towards a seventh win, and while he had his chance on August 16, that was only his second run back. His last prep form reads well through Is It Me, Enxuto and Wonder Boy.
8. Pondalowie resumes at 1400m despite never racing past 1100m. She showed class early last season and her ability needs to be respected in this.
6. Yoshinobu resumed gelded and scored fresh before flopping on a Heavy 10 as a $1.70 favourite. This stable can turn them around quickly.
Selections: 15,13,8,6.
Race 4 - 1:45PM Remembering Mikaela Claridge Tips (2000m)
In an open affair, 4. Berkley Square is an each-way hope fourth-up, having improved with each winter run and arriving with a strong fitness base for this 2000m assignment.
He’s effective on good tracks but has always excelled on rain-affected ground, and his last chasing effort at Moonee Valley should bring him right on.
14. Revelare was a touch plain first-up but is being aimed higher this spring, and last prep he strung wins together from his second start onwards.
French import 13. Newlook hit a flat spot on Australian debut over 1600m but picked up again late, and 2000m is the logical progression second-up.
3. Bankers Choice brings some residual Queensland fitness and was asked past the line in his last jump-out to sharpen him up.
Selections: 4,14,13,3.
Race 5 - 2:20PM Tile Importer Heatherlie Stakes Tips (1700m)
Rise At Dawn was a popular Heatherlie winner last year, but this race often throws up rougher results, with Soulcombe ($20), No Effort ($21) and In Good Health ($61) among recent victors, while you could make a case for most runners in this edition.
From a kinder draw and with 3kg less after a sound Flemington return, 11. Brayden Star looks well placed, and he moved nicely in a tick-over jump-out.
A three-time stakes winner in Europe and Group 1 placed in France, 5. River Of Stars showed enough in her first Australian prep and arrives off a solid Sydney trial.
Market elect 2. Golden Path has never won second-up, which is the knock after his fighting return third, but he does relish wet ground.
7. Berkshire Breeze resumes off two good jump-outs and has ability, but he has been costly for punters.
Selections: 11,5,2,7.
Race 6 - 2:55PM ive > McNeil Stakes Tips (1200m)
This is a good race but more likely a spring form reference, with resuming stars clashing against fitter winter types.
6. McGaw could be suited fresh at 1200m, with the unbeaten youngster showing raw talent last prep. He was scratched from the Vain Stakes on August 16 with a temperature, but has trialled well since.
Another unbeaten returner is 2. Vinrock, who ended his first prep with a Group 1 Champagne Stakes victory. He may be the best horse to emerge from the race but will improve with the run.
4. Jimmy Recard arrives fit after fighting hard to complete a Vain Stakes hat-trick, and his trainer Ciaron Maher has won three of the last eight editions.
At just his second start, 8. Express Class ran the fastest late sectionals of the Vain Stakes, having earlier defeated Ferivia (later a Group 3 winner) on debut.
Selections: 6,2,4,8.
Race 7 - 3:30PM The Henley Homes Heath 1100 Tips (1100m)
If the track downgrades, don’t be surprised if 15. Outback Miss starts favourite, having destroyed a midweek field on heavy ground in January after 10 months off.
She completed a double before running into Commemorative, a talented mare who had been luckless at Group 1 level and was Group 1 placed soon after.
10. Belegato is a Queensland visitor who bounced back to form on August 9. His early carnival references were fine, and he has a fitness edge on some rivals.
4. Mazu passed $9m in prizemoney when winning last prep. He thrives on wet ground and has trialled sharply twice in August.
6. Zarastro has worked well since a narrow Group 1 defeat in June, but he doesn’t want it too testing underfoot.
Selections: 15,10,4,6.
Race 8 - 4:10PM Evergreen Turf Cockram Stakes Tips (1200m)
There are some appealing double-figure chances, starting with 6. Geegees Mistruth, who is six-from-six in Tasmania and was competitive in Melbourne last spring.
The Thousand Guineas trip was too far, but 1200m looks ideal and the jockey was swinging off her in two winter trials ahead of this.
7. Abounding brings residual Queensland fitness and is a very honest mare. Robert Heathcote doesn’t often travel south these days, so her presence is noteworthy.
12. Miss Roumbini has been ultra-consistent, though well placed by her stable, and this will give a clearer guide on her ceiling.
On paper 2. Magic Time is clearly the one, but glue-on shoes and a flat trial leave a small query about her readiness first-up.
Selections: 6,7,12,2.
Race 9 - 4:45PM Stow Storage Memsie Stakes Tips (1400m)
6. Another Wil proved his Group 1 WFA credentials over this track and trip in February when taking out the CF Orr Stakes first-up, and he has always fired early in a campaign with three wins from four fresh runs.
He also boasts a superb Caulfield record with four wins and a second from six attempts, and he has never finished out of the top three over 1400m here, striking three times.
11. Treasurethe Moment has been nothing short of outstanding, winning nine of 11 and finishing runner-up in the other two, including eight straight victories capped by an Oaks double. She may prove even more effective over shorter trips this preparation.
7. Pinstriped is the defending champion and looks big odds in his title defence, but his first-up PB Lawrence run was encouraging, closing off behind Private Eye despite the slowly run tempo.
Champion 1. Mr Brightside adds another layer of intrigue, bringing a stellar Caulfield 1400m record, but how well is he going? Failed in Hong Kong and recent hit-out's plain, albeit he's never been a great worker.
Selections: 6,11,7,1.
Race 10 - 5:20PM Sportsbet Feed Handicap Tips (1400m)
There’s plenty to like about the Cliff Brown-trained 10. Sepals, who strung together wins at starts two, three and four before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas as a tired horse at the end of his prep.
The son of Calyx would have gone to the Memsie Stakes had he competed well in the PB Lawrence, where he was scratched at the barriers and his August 20 jump-out was stylish enough to suggest he should be winning this if big spring targets await.
13. Plymouth was competitive in strong company as a three-year-old and split two smart ones when resuming fresh over this track and trip. His second winter jump-out was solid.
Irish import 5. Cote Atlantique could be the knockout. He was only fair on Australian debut for Henry Dwyer before a spell, but I've liked his winter lead-up work.
1. Deakin resumes with bigger Cups goals in mind, and while 1400m is short of his best, his trials have been sharp for a stayer.
Selections: 10,13,5,1.
