Bunbury Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Phat Chaps

Dropping back to a set-weights provincial maiden looks ideal for Phat Chaps after the Mitchell Pateman-trained galloper contested a Belmont Class 1 on August 5.

He was poorly in at the weights there with 60kg and gave weight to every rival, including eventual winner Rosie Can Run, who carried 1kg less despite already being a winner and had also been competitive in stronger metropolitan company throughout summer.

Phat Chaps still refused to give in when finishing runner-up and has improved with every run this campaign, looking in need of the gallop when resuming over 1300m at Northam before just peaking late after covering ground second-up on July 23.

There is also strong form around his first campaign as a late two-year-old and early three-year-old, with his first two starts coming in Saturday metropolitan races won by the smart King Of Light.

His latest run from that preparation was a competitive fourth-of-10 behind Zourun Run, who has won three Saturday races over winter, while runner-up Pony Up has also measured up in stronger company with two Stakes placings last month.

Bunbury Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Newhaven Prince

After a decent debut at Belmont on February 18, when making some inroads from back in the field over 1200m, Newhaven Prince rounded out his first campaign with consecutive runner-up finishes.

The latest of those three-year-old efforts came at Ascot on March 18 when beaten as favourite, before a spell and a sound Belmont trial last month that suggested the son of Xtravagant would improve from whatever he produced fresh.

That first-up effort was a cracker, with Newhaven Prince settling back and covering ground before continuing to work home for second behind the heavily backed The Rocket in a Belmont maiden that rated strongly for both the grade and the August 5 program.

The race comfortably bettered the times of the two 1300m events that followed, while Jarrod Noske has more options from barrier five this time in a weaker field and, as his two March runs showed, Newhaven Prince can settle closer to the speed.

The short turnaround early in the campaign is the slight query, but any improvement from that fresh performance should make him awfully hard to beat.

The market has identified the right favourite in Dark Avalanche, who has been a little frustrating with three placings from as many starts this campaign but has still raced well and brings plenty of class.

After having apprentices aboard in all three winter runs, the booking of senior jockey William Pike could make a significant difference now that the gelding is hard fit, making him the clear starting point in the race.

On an each-way basis, Ain'tsobad appeals after fitness appeared to give out late second-up on July 22, which was understandable given she had jumped from 1000m to 1300m only 11 days after a good return in a Saturday 60+ at Belmont.

She was ridden cold and worked home late in restricted room first-up, while her credentials around seven furlongs were established during her second preparation.

Blinkers go on now and the daughter of Maschino has always fired at this stage of a campaign, winning her past two third-up appearances, including a Belmont Class 3 early last season, while her only other third-up loss was a narrow second at the end of her first prep.
