Newcastle Tips August 13

Jockeys Celebration Day Class 1 & Maiden Tips (Race 1)

Newcastle Favourite - Race 1 No. 5 Tacitly

While 1400m proved a little too sharp, Tacitly’s July 10 resumption was terrific as he made ground at Scone to finish runner-up behind Arapawa, with the first two clearing right out from their rivals.

That form could hardly have been franked any stronger, with Arapawa winning a Saturday BM72 at Rosehill eight days later before also proving competitive in BM78 company.

With that reference, Tacitly was understandably heavily backed for a Class 1 set-weights affair over the mile at Scone on July 31, where he simply found one better in Valador.

Although disappointing as a short-priced favourite, the key on Thursday is the blinkers going back on, with that gear change having preceded his third-up demolition job at Eagle Farm in January over a similar distance before a competitive fourth in Saturday three-year-old company.

It may simply be a case of Tacitly needing the blinkers, which were removed before his winter return and are reapplied now with a couple of runs under the belt.

Port Stephens 4WD Tours Midway Maiden Tips (Race 4)

Newcastle Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 2 Gold Globe

With five winners and nine placegetters from his last 20 starters, the David Payne stable has been in consistent touch of late.

Among those to finish in the money was Gold Globe, who comes here off a third-of-six in a 1550m Super Maiden at Randwick-Kensington on July 29, working home honestly in restricted room at a big price.

He beat home Claudel in the process, with that mare arriving off four consecutive runner-up finishes in metropolitan maidens.

Despite some market support, Gold Globe had failed first-up in a late-season two-year-old handicap at Randwick, but that was on heavy ground and he has generally been competitive in handy company.

His first campaign ended with a fourth-of-nine at Newcastle behind Southend, who was an impressive Group 3 winner at his next start, and this is comfortably the weakest race that Gold Globe has seen.

Destination Port Stephens Cup BM64 Tips (Race 7)

Newcastle Value Bet - Race 7 No. 11 Nafanua

Asilah heads the market for the penultimate race on Thursday’s Newcastle program despite currently being the third emergency, with connections clearly keen to come here from a low draw after the Chris Waller-trained galloper impressed on debut in January.

She is also accepted for Race 6, a weaker event where she is favourite despite drawing wide, while at an each-way quote Nafanua appeals in this assignment.

The Bjorn Baker-trained mare gained a confidence boost before a break when leading throughout in a Cowra maiden on March 9, with the stable often happy to take its developing types to the country circuit early.

Her return at Illawarra Grange on July 30 was good, with Nafanua no match for Capture Me, who brought strong metropolitan form lines, but she was unable to build momentum when required and still finished off well late in that 1150m contest.

Although drawn out, Herman Said appears the only logical threat for the lead and is positioned just outside her, giving Dylan Gibbons the option to push across early while he continues a better-than-16% strike rate for the Baker stable over the past 12 months.

The Prince Of Merewether BM64 Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Newcastle Best Bet - Race 8 No. 1 Prince Of Sorts

Given there were no previous first-up wins on his resume, Prince Of Sorts’ fresh performance at Doomben on July 11 was a pass mark after heading there off a Hawkesbury trial victory.

We were with the five-year-old at an each-way price in a provincial BM68 at his home track of Wyong on July 23, where he grabbed third and could easily have won with better luck.

Prince Of Sorts covered ground throughout on that turning circuit and still stuck on bravely, while the form has held up with three subsequent winners emerging from the race.

That includes runner-up Doradus, who scored in metropolitan company at Canterbury last week, while Wyong winner Sponars was subsequently placed in a Saturday BM72.

Those are strong references for Prince Of Sorts coming back in grade to a BM64 third-up from a kinder draw, and while the mile remains the main query, he has placed in two of three attempts over the trip and his latest 1600m effort suggested he does see it out.
