We’ve highlighted the roughies at Randwick, Belmont, Doomben, Morphettville Parks and Moonee Valley who can run big races at odds.

Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 5 No. 3 Sonoftheboss

Jim Taylor has his team flying, with six winners and three placegetters from his last 20 starters. He’ll be hoping that stable form continues with Sonoftheboss, who is searching for improvement third-up.

Fitness is always a factor on rain-affected ground, and this gelding has had two solid August runs to tighten him up. He had no luck fresh when back in a slowly run race but still produced the second-fastest last 400m.

He peaked late that day and his second-up record is plain, so the August 23 miss can be forgiven.

Third-up is where he usually hits his straps, with three placings from as many attempts in stronger races. That profile gives him blowout claims here.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 9 No. 11 Aldolfito

Aldolfito didn’t quite progress in Victoria, but he showed talent with a Melbourne metro double last season. Since moving north, he’s been working back into form.

On Queensland debut he failed on heavy ground behind Tuff Tu Muss but quickly rebounded with a second-up victory. He then ran flat third-up in a handy Class 3 but improved at big odds on Ipswich Cup Day.

That June 21 event has proven strong, producing a subsequent Group 3 winner, and his run there suggests he can measure up when things fall his way.

He resumed on August 16 in a race that didn’t suit, but that effort will bring him on and he draws kinder this time around.

Moonee Valley Roughie Tip

Moonee Valley Roughie - Race 4 No. 2 Lincoln Rocks

Lincoln Rocks produced a tidy fresh run on August 23, warming up late and hitting the line strongly. He’s a horse that always improves with distance, and second-up looks a better set-up.

His form in Victoria has been more reliable than his northern runs, and this drop in grade should help him find his level. He has the advantage of a terrific record at The Valley.

Prior to this prep, he’d never finished out of the top two at the track, recording two wins and a second over this course and distance. That affinity counts for plenty.

With the right tempo and a touch of luck in running, Lincoln Rocks shapes as a genuine each-way contender.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 9 No. 15 Bad Detective

Bad Detective was in need of the run when resuming on August 9, over-racing early and tiring late. It was a forgive effort and one that brought him on nicely.

He improved second-up on August 23, working on the speed in a fast-run race before fading late to finish sixth of thirteen. It was a much stronger showing.

Third-up last prep he produced his career-best performance, bolting in on the Parks circuit after setting a solid tempo. Importantly, he carried 3.5kg more on that occasion than he does here.

Fit now and well weighted, he looks ready to peak and is a live chance stepping to 1400m.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 5 No. 8 Sun 'N' Sand

Lord Penman heads the market, but stepping to 1600m second-up from a wide draw, he’s no certainty. That opens the door for Sun 'N' Sand to figure at a price.

Her Goulburn return on heavy ground can be forgiven, as she had just one fair trial beforehand and treated that run more like another conditioning hit-out. She did warm up late and will strip fitter here.

Her three-year-old season reads strongly, with two spring wins from as many starts before resuming in February to score second-up. She also held her own in Group company, highlighted by a Group 1 runner-up finish behind the classy Treasurethe Moment.

Second-up again and fitter for the return, she profiles as a value chance against a field that lacks depth.
