Moonee Valley Tips September 6

Race 1 - 12:10PM Ladbrokes Top 2/3/4 Betting Handicap Tips (1600m)

It’s a tricky race to open Moir Stakes Day, with three of the top four market elects having finished alongside each other on the August 23 program.

6. Miewa was in action 10 days earlier, defeated by Godfried Kirk at Sandown on August 13. He was set a real task in that 1400m clash, while he’d also been held up prior at Caulfield when catching the eye late and beating home two subsequent winners.

The step to 1600m looks suitable for the son of Maurice, who was good from the back in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ at just his second start before a spell.

From the blanket finish a fortnight ago, 5. Ornos was strongest late, 2. Godfried Kirk was disappointed for a run, and 1. Crossbow peaked after making an early move.

That makes the reference hard to trust with confidence.

Selections: 6,5,2,1.

Race 2 - 12:40PM Drummond Golf Handicap Tips (1600m)

An awkward getaway proved costly for 11. Yachiyo when resuming last month. She was forced to settle back with 60kg and did a good job to build momentum late, running the fastest last 600m and 400m of the race.

A cleaner jump will be vital here from barrier one. Lightly raced and progressive, she also brings good form from February’s Futures Stars, where she finished around some stakes-class operators.

7. Into You looked a super talent early in her career, producing stylish back-to-back wins at starts two and three before running well in Group 2 company. She hasn’t gone on with it since, but her two runs this campaign have been encouraging.

8. Bonnaroo could be the knockout. She was set a big task here two starts back, but her efforts either side of that have been strong, and she was unlucky last time when we were on at Warrnambool.

5. Moonlight Circus deserves favouritism, with two wins and a second behind a smart one to open her prep.

Selections: 11,7,8,5.

Race 3 - 1:15PM Strathmore Community Bendigo Bank Handicap Tips (1600m)

1. Kings Valley rises sharply in weight and has a tricky draw, but he drops well in grade and brings the best last-start form.

The Ciaron Maher-trained import was fourth at Caulfield, with the first two across the line filling the Listed Heatherlie Stakes quinella last week. Revelare, who finished seventh in that same August 16 race, has since come out and won. That’s easily the strongest form reference here.

8. Farhh Flung continues to run well without winning. He has been forced wide at his last two Valley starts, but still produced the fastest sectionals when fourth on August 9 and stuck on bravely again last time. Barrier one gives him every chance.

2. Fire Of Etna has placed in two of her three Valley attempts, with the only miss coming at Group 2 level. Her winter form has been mixed but the addition of winkers could spark improvement.

6. Falcon Of Malta is another who could improve sharply third-up after racing on heavy ground fresh and sticking on fairly second-up with a big weight.

Selections: 1,8,2,6.

Race 4 - 1:50PM Rexel Electrical Supplies Handicap Tips (2040m)

2. Lincoln Rocks warmed up late in his fresh tilt on August 23, an encouraging effort for a horse who improves with distance. His form in Victoria has been more consistent than his northern runs, and he looks well placed dropping in grade second-up.

He has a terrific Valley record. Prior to his most recent return, he had never finished out of the top two here, with two wins and a second - all over this track and trip.

8. Fame is in the midst of a long drought but continues to hit the line strongly. Forget his Flemington run on July 5 before a freshen-up - his closing sectionals at Caulfield either side of that were the best of the race.

7. Raging Bull, once a stakes-class stayer in Sydney, is racing well for his new yard. He built confidence with a last-start win after covering ground at Sandown prior.

4. Red Aces was unsuited fresh when back against the track pattern, but his last jump-out leading in was sound. A Group 2 winner at this course and distance, he was gelded ahead of this prep.

Selections: 2,8,7,4.

Race 5 - 2:25PM Orbit Logistics Chautauqua Stakes Tips (1200m)

All eyes will be on the resuming 3. Angel Capital. His autumn campaign was aborted after a strong Caulfield return, but he remains unbeaten fresh from four attempts, including a win on this program last year.

Now with Chris Waller, he brings class to this race and should prove hard to hold out.

2. Zou Sensation has been kept ticking over after a winter hat-trick. His all-the-way Flemington win last start was brave, and the prior form through El Rocko has stood up. He’s also a dual Valley winner.

New South Wales visitor 1. Compelling Truth adds intrigue. His overall strike-rate is imposing and he was a Listed winner only two starts back.

Compelling Truth looks the main on-speed threat along with 5. Red Hot Nicc, who is aiming for a Valley hat-trick.

Selections: 3,2,1,5.

Race 6 - 3:00PM McMahon’s Dairy McKenzie Stakes Tips (1200m)

The McKenzie Stakes often proves a valuable spring reference and this year’s edition looks no different, where a very competitive field lines up.

6. Planet Red opened at double figures but that was quickly snapped up. The classy youngster is unbeaten from two starts, having beaten smart opposition on debut before a spell and then returning with a strong Sandown win that has already produced another Saturday winner.

He may want further soon, but his raw talent can carry him a long way.

Debutant 9. Rosberg has also attracted early support. The Clinton McDonald-trained colt looked sharp in his first winter jump-out, and while his latest was only fair, the stable won this race last year and clearly know the path.

1. Space Rider and 5. Estremo look hard to split from their August 23 clash. Space Rider enjoyed the run of the race, while Estremo had to circle the field from the back. Both can measure up again.

Selections: 6,9,1,5.

Race 7 - 3:35PM Musk Creek Farm Atlantic Jewel Stakes Tips (1200m)

This doesn’t look the strongest edition of the Atlantic Jewel, but the race has a history of producing classy fillies such as Stay With Me, Shoals and Charm Stone.

8. Alpha Sofie is the most interesting runner. She was switched south after recording a Brisbane double over winter and has since looked good in a Pakenham jump-out. Her last Queensland run was full of merit, sustaining a long, wide run and still finishing off strongly.

1. The Playwright isn’t a star but she’s typical of the Waterhouse & Bott yard - tough, brave and suited on speed. She did enough fresh and could get an uncontested lead from a low draw.

14. Point Barrow made ground in the Listed Merson Cooper before a spell and returned last month to score despite a slow start. That win was stronger than the margin suggests.

5. Ole Dancer is unbeaten and brings class, but she will need luck from a wide barrier.

Selections: 8,1,14,5.

Race 8 - 4:15PM Ranvet So You Think Stakes Tips (1500m)

With most of his rivals being stayers or middle-distance types resuming, 4. Desert Lightning has found the perfect race to bounce back.

He was unsuited in a slowly run PB Lawrence but still managed second behind Private Eye, and should arguably have beaten that horse in the Stradbroke. From a wide draw he can roll forward and settle outside the speed, which looks ideal here.

11. Glint Of Silver is the likely leader. He was pressured early when resuming at Caulfield but boxed on well and will strip fitter. The concern is his second-up record.

6. Moira had excuses in the PB Lawrence and was well backed on her Australian debut in the Doncaster Mile. She's drawn out, though.

12. Rumbled Again was a Group 3 winner last spring and wasn’t far away second-up on August 23. She’s worth keeping safe.

Selections: 4,11,6,12.

Race 9 - 4:50PM Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes Tips (1000m)

The Group 1 Moir Stakes is the headline act and promises a fast, high-class contest.

11. Skybird resumes after injury cut short her autumn, but not before she produced a brilliant win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning. She had a quiet trial before sharpening up with a Horsham heat win on August 27.

While she’s unlikely to match the early speed, her explosive turn-of-foot can bring her into play late if she’s within striking distance.

14. Niance is the obvious danger. She has an unblemished fresh record of four-from-four and a terrific overall strike rate. Grahame Begg has had her tuned with two jump-outs and a trial, and although injury denied her an autumn campaign, she returned in style with a May 31 win.

10. Arabian Summer was at the end of her prep when failing in the William Reid but has been kept to shorter trips this time, which looks the right move. She has three wins and two seconds from five 1000m attempts, and two wins plus a second from three first-up runs.

9. Oak Hill was a beaten favourite here a fortnight ago but had excuses. Prior to that, he’d built a superb Valley record of four wins and a second from five attempts. Blake Shinn is back aboard, having been on for his last two victories.

Selections: 11,14,10,9.

Race 10 - 5:25PM Powerflo Solutions Handicap Tips (1200m)

3. King Zephyr can be forgiven his Straight Six failure when at the end of his prep, where testing ground and a drop in trip at that stage of the campaign was against him. Prior to that he’d won four of his first five starts and looked a galloper going places.

With two jump-outs and a trial under his belt, the Grahame Begg-trained gelding should be forward enough for this return assignment and he needs to build his rating up for feature handicaps over the spring.

1. La Fracas is perhaps best placed with genuine give in the ground, but his recent form has been excellent and he continues to find a way. He's unbeaten from five starts over 1200m.

10. Princess Que faces a tougher test but arrives fit and in form chasing a hat-trick. She hasn’t been afraid of a scrap in her recent wins, digging in when it mattered.

5. Fission may be outclassed against the market fancies but he has a good Valley and first-up record. He’s the value play for the exotics.

Selections: 3,1,10,5.
