Menazzi landed the fifth win of his career at the Gold Coast three starts ago, saluting over 1800m when overcoming a wide barrier on soft ground.

He wasn’t suited by the rise to 2200m at Doomben next time out, finishing down the track at long odds, but that run can be forgiven given the set-up.

The seven-year-old sharpened up when dropping in trip for the 1470m Gympie Cup on sand, where he boxed on gamely for second.

Back to turf and drawn in barrier two, Jake Bayliss should have him closer in the run, and at a nice price he’s capable of surprising.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 3 No. 6 June

June has been a model of consistency since joining the Sears stable, finishing top two in five of his six starts this preparation.

His only miss came here in a 2050m Benchmark 68 when he over-raced early, yet he was still beaten just over a length and wasn’t disgraced.

He had placed second at the Sunshine Coast on a Soft 7 the start prior, and he also owns a Murwillumbah win on rain-affected ground.

With a strong finishing burst and conditions to suit, he profiles as a genuine value play in this line-up.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Exceed Speed

Exceed Speed has continued to improve with racing, building off a solid first-up fourth at this track.

He went on to finish a narrow runner-up over 1350m here second-up on soft ground, before breaking through at Eagle Farm last start.

Settled midfield over 1400m, he hit the line strongly to claim a deserved victory against Class 4 company.

The extra trip looks a positive and with Ben Thompson staying aboard, he’s well placed to record back-to-back wins.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Bunker Hut

Bunker Hut is third-up and ready to peak after two strong efforts in Sydney to kick off his campaign.

He was wide throughout when a close fourth first-up at Rosehill, and he backed that up with a brave second on a Heavy 8 in Benchmark 94 grade.

The drop back to Brisbane company represents a clear class drop, and from the inside alley he maps to enjoy a perfect run behind the speed.

With Jace McMurray’s 3kg claim bringing him in well at the weights, he looks the standout bet of the program.
