A decent support program of competitive handicaps adds depth, and with rain about, fitness and race pattern will be crucial, with our best bets, value plays and roughies outlined below.
Belmont Tips September 6
Glenroy Chaff Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Belmont Value Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Sonoftheboss
Jim Taylor has been in good form over the last few weeks, preparing six winners and three placegetters from his last 20 starters, and he’ll be hopeful of an improved showing from Sonoftheboss.
Fitness can be crucial on a wet track, especially from a stable whose runners often race on speed, and this gelding has two August runs under the belt.
Nothing went right first-up when settling back in a slowly run race, but he found the line well once clear, recording the second-fastest last 400m before peaking late.
His second-up record is plain, so the August 23 miss can be forgiven, but third-up is a different story - he’s placed in all three attempts in arguably stronger races than this.

Belmont Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Ain’tsobad
There’s an old saying that 1000m is a specialist’s distance, and while Ain’tsobad doesn’t quite fit that mould, her August 27 resumption over the short trip was a cracker.
She rattled home with the fastest closing sectionals of the entire Belmont card when finishing third, and she’ll be much better suited stepping up in trip where she can settle closer.
Still lightly raced for a six-year-old with just eight starts, Ain’tsobad made a big impression last campaign when opening with a winning hat-trick.
She carries 2.5kg less than she did fresh, handled a Soft 7 comfortably, and crucially has a run under her belt against key rivals who resume here.

Belmont Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Fluro Neuro
If the predicted rain arrives, the wide barrier shouldn’t be a major disadvantage, with outside lanes often coming into play when Belmont is testing.
Fluro Neuro looks well set-up third-up for the Farnley, with the 1400m suiting after a strong chasing effort on August 13 when forced to make ground from the rear.
He was handier when resuming in the Belmont Newmarket, and while this is back under handicap conditions, he carries 2kg less and doesn’t face much proven quality among those weighted beneath him.
After a hat-trick through February and March (the first of those third-up over 1400m), he’s since strung together five seconds, while this is a good chance to go one better.

Belmont Best Bet - Race 8 No. 1 Autumn Rebel
It’s a little surprising to see each-way odds available for Autumn Rebel, who won a similar race on August 16 and drops 2kg here with a 3kg claimer engaged.
The Darren McAuliffe-trained gelding signalled his readiness first-up when storming home for second over 1400m (race-fastest last 200m), and he franked that run second-up with a strong mile victory.
Still working back from a 16-month layoff, there’s every chance he can improve again in this third-up assignment at the mile.
A genuinely heavy track is an unknown, but he handled a Heavy 8 on resumption and has been faultless in his two runs this year.
