Our roughie plays focus on runners overlooked in early markets at Rosehill, Flemington, Doomben, Morphettville and Belmont, each of them capable of delivering at double-figure odds or better.
Belmont Roughie Tip
Belmont Roughie - Race 7 No. 8 Soldanelle
Soldanelle tackles a strong 66+ contest, but the depth of the field means she goes around at appealing each-way odds. A consistent mare, she has delivered two wins and three placings across her last two preps and scored at Ascot third-up last campaign.
Her return on July 26 was excellent, charging late after being held up and showing she had come back in terrific order with strong closing sectionals.
Second-up she was flatter when finishing down the track behind Cool Memory, but she was still sent out a $7 chance in that race and has a poor second-up record anyway.
Cool Memory has since franked the form with a Listed romp, which adds strength to her profile, and with fitness improving she appeals as a genuine roughie chance on Saturday.
Doomben Roughie Tip
Doomben Roughie - Race 5 No. 1 Beaux Rumble
Beaux Rumble looks well placed under the set weights conditions of this Class 6, particularly with the claim bringing him in attractively at the weights.
His only major miss last prep came when stretched out to 1400m, but he bounced back strongly with a metro win before heading to the paddock.
Both trials leading in have been sound, and with decent fresh stats he has shown enough to suggest he can run well first-up.
Resuming at his preferred 1200m trip, where five of his six career victories have come, he appeals as a genuine roughie chance.
Flemington Roughie Tip
Flemington Roughie - Race 5 No. 11 Robrick
Robrick appeals at big odds given his strong Flemington record, with three placings from as many runs here including a comfortable win at his only 1400m attempt.
His Moonee Valley return was better than it looks on paper, forced to settle further back than ideal from a wide draw before being held up briefly at the 200m, and he should’ve finished closer.
That race has already produced two subsequent winners, a sign that the form holds up strongly, and he gets in much lighter this time around.
With 7kg less to carry and a soft draw at his favourite circuit, he is capable of surprising at odds.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 9 No. 6 I Catchem Fox
I Catchem Fox owns a solid record with three wins and four placings from nine starts, and arguably should have even more victories to his name.
He was in the money at all five outings during his first prep, which culminated in an Adelaide success that marked him as one to follow.
After a brave fresh win in August he covered ground when runner-up on August 23, before a forgive run last Saturday when caught wide and unsuited.
Drawing kinder this time, he looks poised to run a bold race and represents good value.
Rosehill Roughie Tip
Rosehill Roughie - Race 10 No. 7 Brosnan
Brosnan should only strip fitter now two runs into his return from a one-year absence, and he is starting to show signs of building back to his old form.
He was well held first-up on a Heavy 8, but his second-up effort was more encouraging when working into the race despite being in restricted room at stages.
His overall strike rate undersells the talent he displayed as a two and three-year-old, having competed in much stronger company than this.
With further improvement likely and race fitness now on his side, he looms as the value runner to close out the Rosehill program.
