Doomben Value Bet - Race 2 No. 1 Fleet Commander

Fleet Commander has changed stables since his most recent outing when finishing seventh in a 2000m Benchmark 78 at Rosehill at the end of last month. The Irish-bred gelding had been with Bjorn Baker and produced his best run this prep in June when finishing fourth at Canterbury.

That Canterbury performance came over 1900m on a soft 6 and he was beaten less than two lengths, a run that stacked up well against the company he faced. He failed to finish his next start at Rosehill but showed resilience to bounce back with a placing at Warwick Farm in mid-August.

Now in the care of Michael Freedman, Fleet Commander gets a valuable drop in grade for his Brisbane debut. Jockey Jace McMurray claims three kilograms, which gives him an added edge here.

With the distance no issue and a class drop in his favour, he looks a value play to break through for his new stable.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Foreign Press

Foreign Press was well held on debut in the Magic Millions 2YO Plate at Gold Coast in January, but the filly has returned in far stronger order this prep. She resumed with a soft-ground Ipswich maiden win in July before stepping out to 1000m at Eagle Farm and scoring again in good style.

That Eagle Farm success showed her determination, with jockey Cejay Graham guiding her home in what looked a competitive contest. She then stretched to 1200m at the same venue and was only narrowly denied, a performance that suggested she remains on an upward curve.

The daughter of Invader has now built a record of two wins and a second from three runs this campaign, with each effort improving on the last. Dropping back in distance looks a plus and she maps to get every chance from an inside barrier.

With conditions to suit, she appeals as the clear standout in this line-up and looks well placed to return to the winners’ circle.

Doomben Roughie - Race 6 No. 11 Take A Picture

Take A Picture has performed well in city company previously, including a string of top-four finishes last campaign. Among those were a second and third at this venue, with the runner-up effort coming over 1615m in February.

He was spelled following a below-par Sunshine Coast run in March and has been given two conditioning runs at Toowoomba to start the new season. The gelding showed improvement second-up when finishing third over 1300m, beaten less than two lengths in a Benchmark 62.

That effort came on the back of a sixth placing first-up and suggested he is trending the right way. Jake Bayliss now takes over the ride and from an inside barrier he should be able to settle handier.

With the forecast surface no concern and fitness building, he shapes as an each-way hope capable of producing a surprise result at odds.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 8 No. 6 Bullion Boy

Bullion Boy delivered for us at Eagle Farm last start when holding on narrowly over 1400m, and he returns to Doomben here looking to continue his good form. That win came on firmer footing, while a soft 5 surface is forecast this weekend — a scenario that plays to his strengths.

The veteran boasts three wins from four starts on soft ground, including his resuming success over 1200m in July. He then backed that up with a runner-up finish over 1400m before returning to the winners’ list last time.

Georgina Cartwright knows him well and has partnered both victories this prep. From a midfield draw, the pair should again find a suitable run.

Stepping up in trip holds no concerns, given he is a past 1400m winner, and with his proven record on soft going he looks the hardest to beat.
