Saturday’s major meetings throw up a handful of runners at bigger odds who have enough form, upside or setup in their favour to make them worth a closer look.

Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 10 Hedawood

Hedawood is worth forgiving for his July 18 failure before a break, when he covered ground throughout over 1400m and understandably weakened late.

That distance also appeared to stretch the son of Sessions, with most of his stronger form coming over 1200m, and he now resumes over a more suitable sprint trip.

A solid Belmont trial on August 31 suggests he is ready to go fresh, while he has generally come to hand quickly throughout his career, including a debut win over this track-and-trip.

His previous first-up run resulted in a third over 1000m at Ascot, and in an open finale the seven-year-old has enough fresh form and sprint credentials to have each-way appeal at a big price.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 1 No. 16 Pass The Peak

The rise in distance second-up should suit Pass The Peak, who has shown throughout his short career that his better work comes once he gets beyond the sprint trips.

He broke through over 1700m at Ipswich at start four after two competitive Doomben performances, while his only real failure came at the end of his first preparation on a Heavy 10.

There was support for the son of Alpine Eagle at a big price when he resumed over 1350m on August 19, and although he lacked the turn of foot for that trip, he still stuck on well to finish second.

With a low draw, Mitchell Aitken should be able to have him in a handy enough position, and in a race lacking obvious standouts, Pass The Peak can give a strong sight at odds.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 5 No. 10 Suffolk Star

Suffolk Star appeals as one of the more interesting long-priced runners on Saturday given his staying profile and the way Paul Preusker typically prepares his stayers.

The gelding improved sharply last season with three metropolitan wins over 3000m, while his Andrew Ramsden Stakes effort over 2800m at Flemington before a break was better than it reads after racing in the inferior part of the track.

He is no stranger to resuming over a staying journey, having kicked off a previous campaign over 2400m, so there should be enough work underneath him for this assignment.

The market understandably favours the runners arriving with more obvious recent form, but Suffolk Star has the stamina and profile to measure up at a bolter’s quote.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 5 No. 11 Gazelle

Nothing went right for Gazelle on the Parks circuit last time, with the mare doing far too much work early after five weeks between runs and understandably tiring late.

She has since returned to the jump-outs and was solid in a 950m Murray Bridge heat on September 3, while her broader campaign has still contained plenty of improvement.

The mare opened with a comfortable maiden win at Mount Gambier before adding another success at Murray Bridge third-up, with wide barriers proving costly in the metropolitan runs that followed.

She has been settling back from awkward draws in recent starts, but from a much better gate in an easier assignment, Alysha Warren should be able to give Gazelle a far more economical run.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 10 No. 7 World Alliance

World Alliance is not always easy to catch, but he has enough strong form around him to command respect at a big price in the Rosehill finale.

Little went right in his Benchmark 94 run here on August 1, when he covered ground on a day that strongly favoured runners closer to the rail and on speed, with that form since strengthened by Althoff.

His previous run in the Listed Ramornie Handicap was also better than it looks after he was badly held up, while he was competitive in stronger company on this program last year.

The son of Rubick is beginning to get back to a more attractive mark in the weights, and if the track pattern gives the backmarkers their chance, World Alliance has the profile to run a much better race than his price suggests.
