Competitive fields stretch from Ascot to Eagle Farm, offering punters plenty of value opportunities deep into the spring carnival, and we’ve pinpointed a selection of runners across the major meetings who look capable of running big races at odds this Saturday.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 3 No. 2 Weearechoux

An honest type who should strip fitter third-up, Weearechoux was always going to need the first-up hit-out over 1200m after a campaign built around staying trips beyond 2000m.

That stretch included a comfortable 2200m triumph on March 29 with 60kg, so the weight poses no issue as he drops in grade and rises in distance.

He went from 1200m to 1600m second-up — never an ideal profile — and the performance was better than the eighth-of-nine finish indicates.

A stakes winner as a three-year-old in July 2024, the gelding retains the stamina base to figure at a big price.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 8 No. 12 Show A Sign

Show A Sign faces a test on exposed form and ratings, yet the early four-year-old could take advantage of the light weight in open company.

It was a blowout fresh in weaker grade when boxing on for third after working early in a genuinely run contest.

Carries 8.5kg less here and is unbeaten second-up, while he also placed via his only previous try this track and trip.

A short-course specialist who remains capable of giving cheek at a long quote.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 9 No. 4 Austmarr

Austmarr appeals as a value play in an open mares sprint to close Derby Day, the big mare following the same pattern as her $15 win on Golden Slipper Day - a result that earned her a permanent spot in the bets.com.au hall of fame.

She’s a noted improver with racing and steps out third-up again, mirroring the formula that delivered that success.

Wasn’t allowed to find her rhythm at Caulfield last start but now gains the wide draw and straight track that suit.

Kerrin McEvoy reunites, and his three prior rides on her have produced a win and two seconds.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 5 No. 6 Fox Gem

Fox Gem put the writing on the wall with an excellent return at Penola, where he closed strongly for fourth on October 17.

He posted the fastest last 400m of the entire program despite being held up at key stages through the run.

That performance came despite having virtually no prior first-up record, while his second-up form reads much better.

He’s been competitive at metropolitan level before and is worth another look at odds.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 9 No. 7 Matusalem

Matusalem looks an interesting roughie in a deep race after building steadily through two runs this preparation.

The Albury Cup winner’s return in the Bill Ritchie over 1400m was encouraging, closing off with the fastest last 400m of the race.

He wasn’t as prominent second-up over a mile but still performed evenly and has since tuned up with an October 20 trial.

That effort should bring him right to peak fitness, and he’s capable of making his presence felt at a price.
