After a runner-up finish in a strong maiden on debut, Observer broke through with a five-length Sandown win before heading to the paddock following an end-of-prep run at Flemington.

The Godolphin colt has returned in superb order this spring, and after two luckless efforts — covering ground when second-up and then held up at key stages when third in the Caulfield Guineas — he made amends with a soft victory in the Moonee Valley Vase.

That last-start win has seen him tighten further in Victoria Derby betting, with Observer now the clear favourite at $1.90 with Ladbrokes.

Providence ($6.50) ran a strong race for second in the Moonee Valley Vase, finishing behind Observer in the Group 2 feature over 2040m.

The Chris Waller-trained colt settled midfield under James McDonald and closed off well late, showing genuine staying promise in his first test beyond 1800m.

Options ($11) stepped up to Group 2 company in the Moonee Valley Vase following a win in the Listed Super Impose Stakes at Flemington. He finished fifth in the Vase after being held up at key stages before getting home nicely once clear.

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained colt had built strong form heading in, with three wins and an unlucky third from his previous four starts.

Autumn Mystery ($12) has thrived stepping up in distance, winning the Victoria Derby Preview over 1800m before taking out the Group 3 Caulfield Classic over 2000m.

Victoria Derby Winners

A cornerstone of Melbourne racing, the Victoria Derby was first run and won in 1855 by Rose Of May, and the race has gone from strength to strength ever since.

The immortal Phar Lap was a winner in 1929, as was Dulcify in 1978, and in more recent times Extra Brut claimed the Derby before being sold to Hong Kong.

Worth $2 million, the Victoria Derby is one of the feature races on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which spans four race days across a week.

While the event no longer draws the absolute cream of the crop as it once did, the prize money on offer ensures the fields remain strong and competitive.

Manzoice (2022), Riff Rocket (2023), and Goldrush Guru (2024) have won the past three editions of the Victoria Derby.
