Alexander Zverev vs Learner Tien Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Has Zverev recovered from turbulent build-up?
Alexander Zverev faces Learner Tien in the first round of the French Open, seeking his first Grand Slam title amidst a challenging season. Despite recent health issues and a history of early Grand Slam exits, Zverev remains a formidable opponent. However, his previous loss to Tien in Acapulco and Tien’s victory over Medvedev suggest this match could extend beyond 28.5 games. Tien has struggled on clay recently, but his ability to challenge top players makes this match a must-watch.

A maiden major title continues to elude Zverev and his preparations for this year's French Open have been anything but ideal. The German opted to take the enticing appearance fee on offer by desperate Hamburg tournament organisers last week, but his campaign ended in the second round against Alexander Muller. Zverev later revealed he 'threw up 37 times' and had a fever of 39.4 degrees on the eve of that match. To make matters worse, Zverev's plane to Paris was struck by lightning, forcing an emergency landing.
Now, Zverev must contend with a potentially tricky opening round test, with Tien famously beating him in Acapulco earlier this season. Tien also took a top 10 scalp over Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open to begin the year, so the American teenager cannot be overlooked here - even though his record on clay hasn't been impressive over the last couple of months. Early rounds at slams have tended to be more complicated than they should be for Zverev over the course of his career, so I'll back Tien to make this competitive enough to exceed 28.5 total games.
Head To Head
Tien leads 1-0, beating Zverev 63 64 in the second round of Acapulco earlier this year.
Alexander Zverev Form
It's been a wild season for Zverev, who comes into Roland Garros with a 25-10 record amid many questionable scheduling choices.
After suffering yet more Grand Slam heartbreak in the Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner, Zverev decided to play on clay in South America inside of hardcourt in Europe or North America.
With the No. 1 ranking within reach due to Sinner's suspension, Zverev stumbled and suffered several poor defeats.
Even though Zverev was able to pick up his first title of 2025 in Munich, it didn't lead to anything of note and he remains searching for his best tennis after early exits at the big events in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
Zverev made the final of Roland Garros last year and got himself to a winning position against Carlos Alcaraz, but as has been the case, the German went into his shell and paid the price, ultimately losing in five sets.
Learner Tien Form
It's been a great breakout season for Tien, despite an overall negative 7-11 tour-level record heading into his debut French Open campaign.
Tien has never even played qualifying at Roland Garros, such has been his meteoric rise over the last 12 months.
The 19-year-old did qualify at the Australian Open to begin the year, taking the aforementioned scalp of Medvedev on his way to the fourth round of the main draw.
That result helped propel Tien into the world's top 70, along with the American's win over Zverev in Acapulco, which improved his record over top 10 players to 2-0 in 2025.
However, Tien has struggled on clay, losing five of his last six matches on the surface, with his only win in that period coming over countryman Reilly Opelka.

Verdict
Zverev certainly hasn't had ideal preparation for Roland Garros and he lost his only previous meeting with Tien when he was struggling in Acapulco earlier this season.
Tien isn't as big a threat on clay, but he's proven a thorn in the side for top 10 players in his short career - he has the ability to push this match over 28.5 total games.
