Gold Coast Suns vs Hawthorn Hawks, Round 15 2026 - Expert Prediction
Gold Coast can steady their season and strengthen their finals credentials with a home victory over Hawthorn on Saturday.
The Suns have dropped their past three matches but return to familiar surroundings, where they have been one of the competition's strongest teams. They are unbeaten against interstate opposition in home games this season and have an excellent recent record against Hawthorn in Queensland and in the NT, winning their past five meetings.
While the recent form line favours Hawthorn, this shapes as an ideal opportunity for Gold Coast to respond. Their recent losses have come against quality opposition and there were enough positive signs against Geelong to suggest they are not far away from turning things around.
The Suns generated plenty of ball movement opportunities at GMHBA Stadium and were able to transition the ball effectively, but their connection inside 50 let them down. The issues were more about execution and finishing than their overall game style, which supports the view that the three-match losing streak is not as alarming as it appears on paper.
Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell and Daniel Rioli continue to provide the Suns with a strong midfield platform, while John Noble's run and ball use have become increasingly important.
Hawthorn come into the match refreshed from the bye and should regain a number of important players, but there are still some lingering concerns around their ability to capitalise on dominance and put games away, particularly interstate and when in winning positions.
Prior to the break, they generated more than enough opportunities against the Western Bulldogs through clearance dominance and field position, yet poor conversion ultimately proved costly.
That inability to turn inside 50s and clearance wins into scoreboard pressure is a concern against a
Gold Coast side that possesses a stronger midfield than recent results suggest. If the Suns can break even or better around the contest, they have the firepower to make Hawthorn pay at the other end.
Nick Watson continues to be a major threat after kicking multiple goals in eight consecutive matches, while Jai Newcombe, Will Day and Massimo D'Ambrosio are consistently generating opportunities through the middle of the ground. But Gold Coast's midfield group is capable of matching that output, particularly on their home deck.
The Suns will also be motivated by the fact
Hawthorn comfortably defeated them earlier this season. Expect a response from a side that remains firmly in the finals hunt and has traditionally performed well in these conditions.
With Anderson, Rowell and Noble driving the midfield and transition game, King providing a focal point in attack and a strong home-ground advantage behind them, Gold Coast can bounce back from their recent slump and hand Hawthorn another frustrating defeat.
- Gold Coast have won their past five home matches against Hawthorn
- Nick Watson has kicked 2+ goals in each of his past eight matches
- Ben King has kicked 12 goals in his past four home matches against Hawthorn
- Noah Anderson has recorded 30-plus disposals in each of his past three matches against the Hawks.
Head to Head Stats
Hawthorn took out the Round 7 encounter this season by 49 points, but Gold Coast had won three in a row prior to that and have won their past five in Queensland and the Northern Territory against the Hawks.
Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;
- Noah Anderson (Suns) - 30+ disposals in his past three against the Hawks
- Karl Amon (Hawks) - 30+ disposals in his past two against the Suns
- Nick Watson (Hawks) - 2+ goals in his past two against the Suns
- Ben King (Suns) - 14 goals in his past five against the Hawks
Gold Coast come in with a 7-6 record and have dropped their past three, losing to Geelong by 45 points last weekend, following losses to Brisbane by 31 and North Melbourne by six.
The Suns have a poor record against sides above them on the ladder with one win from five, but are unbeaten against interstate opposition in home games this season.
They were beaten at clearance and contested possession by Geelong, leading to a 47-62 inside 50 count in the 60-105 scoreline. Despite that, they generated enough transition opportunities to remain competitive but were unable to connect effectively inside 50 and convert their chances.
Ben King kicked three goals from limited opportunities and has seven from his past two matches for a total of 41 from 12 this season.
John Noble had 30 disposals against the Cats and has hit 30+ in five of his past six. Noah Anderson has had 30+ in four of his past seven, while recording 29, 27 and 25 in the other three matches during that period.
Hawthorn won six of their first seven matches of the season but have lost three of their past five and sit with a win-loss record of 8-4-1 after 13 matches.
They come off the bye after going down to the Western Bulldogs by six points. That loss came despite dominating a number of key measures, including inside 50s and contested possessions, but poor conversion proved costly in the 9.17 (71) to 12.5 (77) defeat.
The Hawks won the first nine clearances of that match and controlled long periods of play, but were unable to turn their dominance into scoreboard separation. Their inability to capitalise on opportunities allowed the Bulldogs to stay in touch before taking control in the second half.
Nick Watson starred with three goals and has kicked 2+ in each of his past eight matches, while Mabior Chol also booted three.
Will Day collected 25 disposals in his second game back from injury, Jai Newcombe had 36, while Massimo D'Ambrosio gathered 29. D'Ambrosio has now recorded 25+ disposals in his past two matches.
