Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are set to clash in the French Open final, each vying for their first title at Roland Garros. Sabalenka, the world's No. 1, has had an impressive run, defeating top players including Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Gauff, on the other hand, is in her third Grand Slam final and is looking to capitalize on her past clay court performances. While Gauff boasts experience, Sabalenka's current form and world ranking make her the favorite to win. This match promises high stakes and thrilling tennis action.

For the first time since the 2018 Australian Open, the world's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players will square off in a Grand Slam final. The last time this occurred at Roland Garros was in 2013, when Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova locked horns.

Either Sabalenka or Gauff will capture a first French Open title. Sabalenka has advanced to her first major final off hardcourt and is the first player to 40 match wins in 2025 after her stunning performance to end Iga Swiatek's 26-match winning streak at Roland Garros in the semi-finals, while Gauff has now reached three consecutive clay finals on the bounce after her runner-up efforts in Madrid and Rome.

Gauff has the experience of playing in a previous French Open final, but for me, Sabalenka is the deserved favourite. The World No. 1 has been the best player in the world for the last couple of years and she further established herself in that regard with her win over four-time champion Swiatek. Sabalenka toppled Gauff in straight sets in the Madrid final and I'm backing the top seed to register a similar result and claim her maiden Roland Garros title.

Head To Head

Currently locked at 5-5. Gauff prevailed 7-6 6-3 in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals late last year before Sabalenka authored a replica 7-6 6-3 triumph in the Madrid final last month.

Aryna Sabalenka Form

Road to the final:

  • 1R: d. Kamilla Rakhimova 6-1, 6-0
  • 2R: d. Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-1
  • 3R: d. Olga Danilovic 6-2, 6-3
  • 4R: d. [16] Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-3
  • QF: d. [8] Zheng Qinwen 7-6(3), 6-3
  • SF: d. [5] Iga Swiatek 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0

Sabalenka has won 40 of her 46 matches so far in 2025, winning three titles and making a further three finals. She's established herself as the undisputed World No. 1 and will be searching for her fourth Grand Slam title on Saturday - and first off hardcourt.

The 27-year-old suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Madison Keys in the Australian Open final to begin the season - she was going for a historic three-peat in Melbourne, but ultimately fell just short in three sets.

It took a while for Sabalenka to return to her best tennis, but after claiming WTA 1000 titles in Miami an Madrid, she's certainly back to her ruthless best.

Sabalenka advanced to the French Open semi-finals without dropping a set and raised her level accordingly to end Swiatek's reign, producing a thunderous deciding set to bagel the four-time champion and book her spot in the final.

Coco Gauff Form

Road to the final:

  • 1R: d. Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2
  • 2R: d. [Q] Tereza Valentova 6-2, 6-4
  • 3R: d. Marie Bouzkova 6-1, 7-6(3)
  • 4R: d. [20] Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-0, 7-5
  • QF: d. [7] Madison Keys 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1
  • SF: d. [WC] Lois Boisson 6-1, 6-2

Gauff has registered a 30-8 record on the season and will be hoping to secure her first title of 2025 in the Roland Garros final.

It will be Gauff's third Grand Slam final after going down in the 2022 French Open showpiece and defeating Sabalenka to capture her first major title at the 2023 US Open.

Somewhat similar to Sabalenka, Gauff struggled after the Australian Open and didn't win more than two matches in a row until Madrid.

However, the 21 year-old has rediscovered her best tennis, making consecutive finals in Madrid and Rome and continuing that momentum by reaching a second final at Roland Garros.

Again, like Sabalenka, Gauff has dropped just one set on her way to the final, coming back from a set down to conquer Madison Keys in the quarters before ending the fairytale run of French wildcard Lois Boisson in the semi-finals, easing to a 6-1 6-2 victory.

Verdict

Sabalenka is the undisputed best player in the world and her display against Swiatek once again proved why.

Gauff meanwhile hit 41 unforced errors vs Keys in the quarters and then faced a wildcard in the semis. Huge step up in class coming here.

Sabalenka won their most-recent clash in straight sets in last month's Madrid final and the World No. 1 is backed for a repeat result to secure her maiden French Open title on Saturday.
