In an exciting French Open semifinal matchup, second seed Coco Gauff will face wildcard Lois Boisson. Boisson's incredible journey has seen her become the first wildcard to reach this stage at Roland Garros and join elite company by beating top-ranked players. Despite her remarkable run, Gauff's experience on the big stage suggests she will likely end Boisson's fairytale journey. While Gauff's previous match performance was less than stellar, her ability to grind out wins makes her the favorite to advance in straight sets.

Gauff is the deserved favourite to make a second Roland Garros final, but all the headlines heading into this showdown rightly revolve around Boisson, who has created history with her extraordinary run to the final four.

Unheard of by the majority of tennis fans before this tournament, Boisson has stunned the world to become the first wildcard to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals. Ranked No. 361 in the world, Boisson is just the third player in the Open Era to make the semi-finals on her Grand Slam debut, joining elite company with Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati. She is also only the second woman in the last 40 years to beat multiple top 10 players in their first Grand Slam main draw after Seles back in 1989.

Boisson has showcased nerves of steel in her last two top 10 scalps over Jess Pegula and Mirra Andreeva, but can lightning strike three times? I just can't see it happening. Gauff was anything but impressive in her semi-final, striking 15 winners to a whopping 41 unforced errors, but she has an uncanny ability to dig out wins and drag opponents down to her level if need be. I'm backing Gauff to end Boisson's magical run in straight sets.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Gauff has registered a 29-8 record heading into this encounter, climbing to No. 2 in the world but still searching for her first title of 2025.

The primary reason for Gauff's rise to No. 2 was her big finish to 2024 that saw her secure titles in Beijing and the WTA Finals, along with Iga Swiatek's struggles.

In fact, Gauff failed to win more than two matches in a row from February to Madrid last month, but she's found some good form again on clay, winning 16 of her last 19 matches on the surface.

The American made back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome, going down to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini respectively.

Gauff advanced to the French Open quarter-finals without dropping a set in wins over Olivia Gadecki, Tereza Valentova, Marie Bouzkova and Ekaterina Alexandrova, but was forced to come from behind in the last eight against Australian Open champion Madison Keys, prevailing 6-7 6-4 6-1 in a scrappy match in which she struck 41 unforced errors to just 15 winners.

It's arguably the most shocking Grand Slam run by any player this century, although Emma Raducanu's title triumph as a qualifier at the US Open may have something to say about that.

In any case, Boisson has stunned the world with her incredible tournament, shattering records and joining esteemed company this past fortnight.

The 22-year-old is the youngest French woman to make a Grand Slam semi-final since current Roland Garros tournament director Amelie Mauresmo in 1999.

After coming from a set down to beat Pegula, Boisson again showcased her fighting spirit, recovering from a break deficit in both sets to conquer Andreeva 7-6 6-3, winning six straight games in the second to register a memorable victory.

Verdict

Boisson has put together one of the most remarkable Grand Slam runs in history, but surely it can't extend into a French Open final...

Gauff wasn't great against Keys, but experience counts in these situations (although nobody's told Boisson so far). In any case, I still think Gauff winning in straights is the most likely outcome.
