Key selections include Apple Eyes in Race 3 as a roughie, Lavandula in Race 5 as the best bet, Sierra Dee Jay in Race 7 as next best, and Shooter Mcgavin as a value pick in Race 8. Ballarat hosts an eight-race program with four maiden races and four Benchmark contests scheduled.

The synthetic track is in use with a number of the runners on display having shown a liking for artificial surfaces in the past.

Ballarat Tips June 16

Whitford Liquid Waste Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)

Ballarat Synthetic Roughie - Race 3 No. 8 Apple Eyes

Recent form is better than it may appear on paper, with Apple Eyes recording two top-four finishes from four starts this preparation.

One of those came at Albury on her penultimate appearance when beaten less than one-and-a-half lengths over 1175m.

The filly was short of room early in that event before staying on strongly through the line.

That effort suggested the rise in distance would suit, while a Heavy 9 track and a wide barrier worked against her at Wagga last time.

Craig Weeding's representative draws more favourably here and, provided she handles the synthetic surface, is capable of surprising at odds.

Manhari BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Ballarat Synthetic Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Lavandula

Winning form over this distance is a key asset for Lavandula, who recorded both of her victories last preparation at the trip.

The Frosted mare scored at Benchmark 62 level at Seymour before ending her campaign in stronger company at Flemington.

Her return run came in a Benchmark 70 event at Caulfield Heath last month.

Despite meeting trouble in running, she was beaten little more than three lengths in a performance that had merit.

Greg Eurell's mare should strip fitter for that effort and, with the drop back to country grade, looks well placed to return to winning form.

Ballarat Synthetic Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Sierra Dee Jay

Previous synthetic-track form provides a strong reference for Sierra Dee Jay, who broke his maiden at this venue in August last year.

That victory came over 1400m when he defeated his rivals by nearly a length.

All five subsequent starts came on turf, with his latest appearance resulting in a fourth-place finish at Werribee in January.

The gelding has tuned up for this return with two jumpout victories and appears to have come back in good order.

Blinkers are applied for the first time, and despite drawing wide, he looks capable of making a winning return under regular rider John Allen.

Ballarat Synthetic Value Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Shooter Mcgavin

Track statistics read well for Shooter Mcgavin, who has finished runner-up in both previous appearances at Ballarat.

The five-year-old has already won twice this year, including a Benchmark 56 success at Stawell in April.

He overcame a wide barrier on that occasion and may again use a similar draw to advantage as the likely leader.

Tom Madden reunites with the gelding after partnering him to victory at Mount Gambier in January.

Unable to secure an uncontested lead at Casterton last start, he can be forgiven that performance and appeals as a value chance if allowed to dictate proceedings.
