USA and Australia lock horns in a pivotal World Cup Group D showdown after both teams scored notable wins in their openers. The USA dominated Paraguay 4-1 with an attacking masterclass, while Australia stunned Turkiye with resolute defense and sharp finishing. Although the USA is favored for their attacking firepower, Australia's ability to rise for big occasions makes this clash unpredictable. USA vs Australia World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

After brilliant opening performances in Group D, the Socceroos and co-hosts USA square off in what could be a fiery World Cup showdown at Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday.

It's time to let the football do the talking as growing rivals USA and Australia lock horns, with the possibility of securing top spot in Group D on the line after both teams picked up three points in their respective opening games.

Australia produced a stunning display to upset a talented Turkiye side in Vancouver, with sublime strikes from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe either side of half-time sending Socceroos fans into euphoric celebrations. Meanwhile, USA showcased some sizzling football to crush Paraguay 4-1, led by star Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, who bagged himself a double.

There's some genuine bad blood here - in last year's friendly, USA central defender Chris Richards had this to say as he struggled to deal with Australia's physical style of play.

“They’re lucky it was a friendly. I was ready to go. And if (the ref) didn’t give me a s*** yellow in the corner, I probably would’ve killed somebody,” Richards told reporters post-game.

And then you can throw in that delusional American pundit and journeyman former player Mike Grella, who has repeatedly thrown shots at the Socceroos in the lead-up to this game, calling the national side a 'lay-up' for the US side.

It's sets the stage for an unmissable World Cup showdown and I think we could be in for an entertaining one. USA do have the better side on paper, but the Socceroos pride themselves on rising to the occasion and proving doubters wrong. I'm going to steer clear of a H2H result and instead focus on goals.

USA are equipped with immense attacking firepower, led by Balogun and supported by Christian Pulusic, Serginho Dest and Weston McKennie - but their narrow back three can be exploited and they rarely keep clean sheets.

Over 2.5 goals and BTTS - Yes are the two main plays I'll focus on. Balogun looks good for another goal - he's a far superior player to Turkiye's striker and will be a handful with his speed and athleticism for the Socceroos' defence. I also love the value on Jordy Bos for a shot on target - he scored in last year's friendly between the two nations and he will be looking to get forward down the left flank, where the USA can leave lots of space.
  • USA have seen Over 2.5 goals in seven of their last eight games
  • USA have seen BTTS - Yes in eight of their last nine games
  • Australia have scored in four of their last five games
  • Australia conceded 30 shots in total vs Turkiye
  • Folarin Balogun scored a double vs Paraguay & fired home 18 goals for Monaco this season
  • Jordy Bos scored vs USA in last year's friendly & had two shots vs Turkiye. He also had 1+ shots on target in four of his last five games for Feyenoord this season & in friendlies vs Cameroon & Curacao

USA vs Australia Head To Head

This will be the first World Cup meeting between the two nations. USA have won the last two friendlies in 2010 and 2025 by 3-1 and 2-1 scores respectively.

USA Form Analysis

It was a dynamic performance by USA in their opening game as they demolished Paraguay 4-0, controlling the game from start to finish.

Mauricio Pochettino's side had 64 per cent of possession and were electric all over the park, with striker Folarin Balogun scoring a double, while Gio Reyna also fired home a brilliant strike in injury time.

It was USA's largest winning margin at the World Cup since 1930, which was also the last time they won consecutive matches at the tournament.

USA Team News

There's question marks surrounding the fitness of star winger Christian Pulusic, who went off early in the Paraguay game due to a calf injury - however, it looks like he will play.

No other changes are expected to be made to the team that eased past Paraguay.

Australia Form Analysis

It was an absolutely sensational performance from the Socceroos as they registered a 2-0 upset win over the more-fancied Turkiye last Saturday night in Vancouver.

Tony Popovic springed some surprise selections, with Patrick Beach coming in for Mat Ryan in goals and having an absolute blinder, making eight crucial saves that kept his side in the game.

Paul Okon-Engstler also had the game of his life alongside Aidan O'Neill in midfield, with his brilliant long-range pass unlocking the pace of rising star Nestory Irankunda, who fired home a memorable goal to put Australia ahead.

Connor Metcalfe then doubled Australia's advantage with a sublime individual strike from long-range, handing the Socceroos their first opening game win at a World Cup since 2006.

Australia Team News

Who knows what Popovic has up his sleeve for this match, but you've got to think Beach retains his spot in goals after his sensational World Cup debut.

I could see Jackson Irvine returning in the centre of midfield, with this set to be a far more physical game, while Irankunda was gassed early into the second half and might be used as an impact sub here, with either Mat Leckie, Nishan Velupillay, Cristian Volpato or Awer Mabil a chance to start on the wing.
