Belmont Roughie Tip
Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 4 Centre Bond
A drop from BM66+ company into a one-metropolitan-win event gives Centre Bond another chance to strike at a big price despite rising 5kg from last Saturday’s assignment.
The Graeme Ballantyne-trained six-year-old is now fourth-up and should be approaching peak fitness, something that proved important during his previous preparation.
He was only fair fresh before being heavily supported second-up in Class 3 company at Belmont, where he was forced back and encountered trouble, while the tactics again worked against him last Saturday when he was restrained to the rear in a slowly run race and left with virtually no mathematical chance.
Jarrad Noske takes over from barrier five and, while Centre Bond has not always been easy to catch, there is enough raw ability there to suggest he can improve sharply back in easier company.
Mornington Roughie Tip
Mornington Roughie - Race 5 No. 9 House Of Lords
A competitive 2000m BM84 is headed in early betting by Federer, while Sapphire Siren also brings strong claims, but House Of Lords appeals as a runner who could be slipping under the market’s guard.
Her latest Sandown effort was considerably better than the result suggests, with the mare settling back in a race shape that worked against her before producing the fastest final 600m of the event.
The lightly raced six-year-old should now be ready for 2000m third-up, having already demonstrated her staying credentials when ending her previous campaign with a BM74 victory on Golden Mile Day at Bendigo.
Her first-up 1400m run at Caulfield can effectively be treated as a barrier trial after she was taken back and never in contention, and with two runs now under the belt, a sharp improvement from the daughter of Almanzor would not surprise.
Murray Bridge Roughie Tip
Murray Bridge Roughie - Race 4 No. 14 Mrs Penny Cracker
The overall strike rate may be modest, but Mrs Penny Cracker spent a long period as a maiden in Victoria before joining Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor, who have done a good job placing tried horses in South Australia.
Two victories followed last season, including a 1707m success at Gawler on January 3, before she remained competitive when stretched further in distance later in the campaign.
All three runs this preparation have contained merit, with excuses first-up and second-up before she improved back onto firmer ground to finish fourth over 1514m at Morphettville last time.
That latest effort should have her close to peak fitness for the rise to 1600m, and with Saturday’s BM0-64 appearing no tougher than her previous assignment, the home-track runner looks capable of producing a much stronger showing at odds.
Rosehill Roughie Tip
Rosehill Roughie - Race 5 No. 10 Karinska
Decorum is clearly the horse to beat at a short quote, but Karinska appeals as a forgotten runner at a massive price for those looking wider in the race.
The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old found 1100m too sharp first-up at Group 3 level and then encountered traffic at her latest appearance over 1200m, where she still appeared a run short regardless.
Her overall strike rate is modest, although that needs context after she won on debut at Canterbury and then spent much of her later two-year-old and three-year-old seasons competing in stakes company, including when placing at Group 1 level in the Flight Stakes over 1600m.
Her best autumn performance came around this distance when unlucky not to win a Group 3 at Randwick third-up in April, and with fitness building again this preparation, she looks capable of outrunning a very big quote.
Toowoomba Roughie Tip
Toowoomba Roughie - Race 8 No. 4 Esjay
A strong local stable, proven fresh form and the prospect of a solid tempo all give Esjay some appeal at an each-way price in the Weetwood.
The son of Rothesay tuned up with a solid September 8 trial and should retain plenty of fitness from a Queensland winter campaign that he bookended with victories.
He opened that preparation with a 1000m success on a Heavy 8 at Eagle Farm before showing his versatility with a mile victory at Doomben on July 18, while there were also several strong performances in much better company between those wins.
Those efforts included a respectable showing at a huge price in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and an unlucky narrow defeat in the Listed Eye Liner on Ipswich Cup Day, and with Angela Jones aboard and a strong tempo likely, Esjay looks capable of launching late at an appealing quote.
