Punters are treated to a deep day of spring racing this Saturday, with feature cards across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth offering strong betting opportunities.

Ascot Roughie - Race 7 No. 9 Costazita

Costazita has been racing better than his results suggest and looks a knockout chance if things go his way. He’s been at big odds in recent starts, but excuses have been there each time.

His only real failures this year came on a heavy track and over 1400m after a freshen, while two runs back he was found to have his tongue back during the race before a tongue-tie was added.

He again had little luck last Saturday in a race that didn’t suit those settling off the speed, but he wasn’t disgraced and carries 4kg less here.

With a few more favours, he can give supporters a big sight at each-way odds.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 2 No. 8 Mcwoody

Mcwoody’s debut win last month had plenty of merit, overcoming traffic after being shuffled back at a key stage to score at Wodonga. That’s not easy for a debutant and shows good race sense under pressure.

He’s since claimed a Cranbourne jump-out over a handy She's A Hustler and now steps to 2000m, a trip he's bred to relish.

The rise in grade is significant, but he’s still learning and open to further progression with added distance.

Any natural improvement at start two would have Mcwoody right in calculations at a big price.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 6 No. 6 Paleface Ringo

This resuming grey hasn’t done much wrong, with three wins and five placings from nine starts. His only miss came when fourth last spring before a spell, and he was two-from-two last campaign.

He covered ground and prevailed via the last of those victories, handling a class rise in the process. That form through second of third that event reads well enough.

Paleface Ringo generally makes his own luck near the speed and gives himself every chance in running.

A consistent type, he shouldn’t be overlooked in a competitive sprint.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 5 Convaaya

He’s from the same family as six-time Group 1 winner and now champion stallion Dundeel, and while still a work in progress, Convaaya continues to improve for trainer Matt Cumani.

The gelding hasn’t quite had the turn-of-foot to put a race away over shorter trips, so the step to 1800m looks a major plus.

After covering ground on debut for a brave fifth at Bendigo, he found one better when well backed last time but stuck on gamely through the line.

With maturity and fitness building, this trip should suit perfectly, and Convaaya can be right in the finish at decent odds.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 4 No. 4 Verona Rose

The main query is that Verona Rose stays at a mile fourth-up, as she appeared to be looking for more ground based on her Epsom Handicap effort, however, this is a far easier assignment.

She showed her class early with a winning hat-trick before a pair of respectable Group 1 showings, and her September form holds up — luckless fresh before a second in a leader-dominated Tibbie Stakes.

Back in grade, she gets the chance to find her rhythm and produce that late strength again. A more genuine tempo would only enhance her finish.

Verona Rose looks a strong each-way chance against this opposition.
