Glorious Goodwood 2026 - Day 1 Preview
Race 1 - Chesterfield Cup Handicap Tips
Eleven of the last 14 renewals of the festival opener have been won by four-year-olds, so it makes sense to side with the younger generation. 17. Parole d'Oro is one of the lesser-fancied four-year-olds in the field, but there's plenty to suggest Michael Bell's gelding can outrun his odds.
Parole d'Oro is yet to win a handicap, but has gone close in several high-quality contests. Bell's charge was narrowly beaten at last year's July Festival and again on his final three-year-old start at York. He then bumped into Ripon specialist Spioradalta on his second outing of the season before acquitting himself well when fourth over a mile at the July Festival earlier this month.
Hector Crouch's mount travelled strongly but lacked the finishing speed to challenge some smart milers that day, and the form of that Newmarket handicap has already been boosted. Parole d'Oro struggled from a poor draw at Glorious Goodwood last year, but is much better berthed this time, and the return to 10 furlongs looks ideal.
Race 2 - Vintage Stakes Tips
Al Hudaiba carries a penalty into the opening juvenile contest after landing the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. The Coles have an excellent record at Goodwood, though, and I'm happy to oppose the favourite with the unbeaten 2. Dr Rascal.
Cole's youngster scored nicely on debut at Leicester despite shaping as though he already wanted a mile. Dr Rascal then got loose before his second start at Ascot earlier this month, yet still travelled powerfully through the race before quickening clear of favourite Rising Tiger in the closing stages.
This represents a significant rise in class, but Dr Rascal took a huge step forward between his first two starts, and this son of Sottsass looks capable of matching the more fancied runners.
Race 3 - Lennox Stakes Tips
Witness Stand benefited from sitting behind a strong pace when winning this race 12 months ago. Lake Forest, meanwhile, was given far too much to do, and Cieren Fallon will be keen not to repeat that mistake with confirmed front-runners Qirat and Poet Master in the field.
3. Marvelman looks ideally suited by the likely race shape. Andrew Balding's four-year-old bolted up in last season's Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster before finding the QEII and the 1351 Turf Sprint in Saudi Arabia beyond him.
P.J. McDonald's mount dropped back to six furlongs for his return in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle and ran an excellent second behind Padorus, who received five pounds from the runner-up. Marvelman is at his best over seven furlongs and has already shown he belongs at this level.
Race 4 - Goodwood Cup Stakes Tips
I'm really looking forward to the second clash between Scandinavia and Trawlerman.
Trawlerman ran an outstanding race on his seasonal return to push a race-fit Scandinavia all the way and is sure to strip fitter this time. Scandinavia will still be extremely difficult to beat, especially if Illinois applies pressure from the front.
At the prices, though, I'm keen to have a small play on 1. Amiloc. Ralph Beckett's stayer won the Cocked Hat Stakes here before following up in the King Edward VII Stakes. He then chased home top-class rivals in the Irish St Leger and produced an excellent fourth in the Breeders' Cup Turf.
Amiloc was an odds-on favourite for the Yorkshire Cup on his return but raced far too keenly before fading late. Dropping back in trip for the Hardwicke Stakes brought about a much-improved display, staying on well to finish sixth behind Giavellotto in what was effectively a Group 1 in all but name.
Connections have chosen this two-mile test over the King George, and Amiloc looks capable of seeing out the extra distance.
Race 5 - Shaker Handicap Tips
The inaugural running of this sprint handicap was won by a 28/1 outsider, so I'm happy to take a chance on 18. Tatterstall at generous odds.
Michael Dods' sprinter landed the 3YO Dash at Epsom in 2023 and followed up with a Goodwood success the following season before injury ruled him out for most of 2025.
Tatterstall returned this spring with narrow defeats at Thirsk and Hamilton before finishing fifth behind Twilight Calls at Newmarket. He carried top weight of 9st 12lb on that occasion but drops to just 8st 11lb here, giving the course winner a much better opportunity.
Race 6 - Maiden Stakes Tips
This looks a particularly competitive maiden, but 6. Dorigo appears to have been underestimated.
Kevin Ryan's juvenile wasn't beaten far by Big Cigar on debut, and that form has worked out well, with the winner scoring again at York and several others boosting the race since.
Kevin Stott's mount then ran an excellent race from a poor draw in the Windsor Castle Stakes, finishing seventh overall and second on his side of the track behind Sale Shark. Dorigo showed he doesn't need to lead and should enjoy a much smoother run into the race on Tuesday.
Race 7 - Fillies' Handicap Tips
Three-year-olds have won all 10 editions of this one-mile handicap, so I'll stick with the younger generation again. Annastarzy and Crazee Icon arrive in winning form, but 13. Wid appeals at the prices if she can overcome a wide draw.
Ralph Beckett's filly raced too freely on debut at Doncaster before finishing a clear second behind the odds-on English Time at Ffos Las. She then opened her account with a comfortable front-running success at Carlisle under Jason Hart.
Eddie Greatrex takes over in the saddle and should be positive again. An opening handicap mark of 80 could underestimate her ability.
Race 8 - Fillies' Handicap Tips
Tuesday's card concludes with another competitive handicap. I'm surprised to see 9. Sing The Blues sitting so far down the betting after such an impressive stable debut for Martin Dunne.
Formerly with William Haggas, Sing The Blues was held up at the rear at Newmarket 11 days ago before travelling smoothly into contention and pulling clear late to beat Shallow and Powdering.
She won her maiden here at Goodwood last October, remains on a workable mark of 85, and looks capable of going close again from stall seven.
