Ascot Roughie Tip
Ascot Roughie - Race 9 No. 7 Impressive Jewel
Outside of a disappointing January 24 performance before a spell, Impressive Jewel had only missed the top four on three previous occasions, with two of those coming at Listed level.
The mare has generally raced well fresh, recording a first-up win and two runner-up finishes from three attempts, while she has also placed in every second-up appearance.
Her latest return resulted in a Class 3 victory at Belmont in November, where she sustained a wide and early run in a brave display.
Impressive Jewel held off Belta Of A Song on that occasion, who later recorded back-to-back wins over summer, and from a good draw under Tash Faithfull, she appeals as a genuine each-way chance.
Caulfield Roughie Tip
Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 10 Alzaro
Although she was no match for the talented Olivanaotherday, the 1200m resumption on the Caulfield Heath track was still a solid return from Alzaro.
Her two subsequent April efforts have both had merit, although remaining at 1200m appeared to work against the filly on each occasion.
The latest came in a Pakenham Class 1, where Alzaro finished runner-up as favourite after dropping in grade.
Now hard-fit and getting to what looks a more suitable trip under the 54kg minimum, the filly is worth another chance at an each-way quote.
Gold Coast Roughie Tip
Gold Coast Roughie - Race 9 No. 11 Navyonthehighway
The 1000m trip looked too sharp for Navyonthehighway when resuming at Eagle Farm on April 25, where the mare never found a comfortable rhythm.
She settled off the speed throughout but was doing her best work late over the closing stages.
Despite encountering some traffic issues, Navyonthehighway recorded the fastest closing sectionals of the race in an encouraging first-up effort.
The mare drops sharply in the weights for this Listed assignment and, with all five wins coming either first or second-up, she profiles as a dangerous roughie.
Gosford Roughie Tip
Gosford Roughie - Race 10 No. 7 Winston Hills
Winston Hills has had his share of setbacks throughout his career, although the gelding has generally remained a consistent performer.
It is worth forgiving the Canterbury resumption on April 22, where he covered ground throughout before tiring late and still finishing within three lengths of the winner.
Second-up last campaign, Winston Hills placed over this distance in a strong BM78 won by Well Timed, who later measured up in stronger company.
The gelding is versatile and, with the main speed influences drawn to his outside, there could be an opportunity to settle closer in the run here.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 4 No. 2 Private Legacy
Private Legacy won this race last year and comfortably accounted for She’s A Hustler in the process, a mare who would likely start a very short-priced favourite in this field.
Her only defeat from two attempts over this track-and-trip came via a narrow second in last year’s Australasian Oaks.
The mare generally improves sharply off her first-up outing, making it worth forgiving the fresh performance.
Her second-up Queen Of The South effort also had merit despite lacking clear luck, and back to a proven setup, Private Legacy appeals at each-way odds.
