Belmont Roughie Tip
Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 15 Gibraltar Gold
She arguably should have won when stepping to 1400m at Belmont on May 23, where Gibraltar Gold got back and was held up in restricted room at key stages before getting home for a fifth-of-12 finish.
That performance suggested the mile might be worth another try, while her only previous attempt over this distance came deep into her last campaign when she placed.
Although this is harder, the four-year-old comes back to the 54kg minimum and remains in One Metro company.
Herault is clearly the one to beat, but Gibraltar Gold has class and, with even luck from a low draw, she is in with an each-way chance in the penultimate under Lucy Fiore, an in-form hoop who has a strong association with the Fernies.
Caulfield Roughie Tip
Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 5 Bon Mistress
She is suited back in grade from a Listed attempt in Adelaide, while dropping back in distance is also a positive.
The five-year-old returns to a mile here, a trip she placed over second-up at Mornington behind Seafall.
That form has been terrific, with Seafall winning her next two starts, including a dominant victory in much stronger company at Sandown last Saturday.
Ideally there is an upgrade or two in the track, and Bon Mistress has the fitness base to handle Soft conditions, while her recent Pakenham and Sandown efforts suggest she is going much better than she was last preparation.
Eagle Farm Roughie Tip
Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 6 No. 17 Within The Law
Within The Law is one of many chances in a very open first quaddie leg, with generous odds available for the Bjorn Baker-trained filly.
She was unlucky in her Group 3 resumption in March when hitting a flat spot after spotting the field a start, before being denied clear galloping room when it mattered.
The filly has since won a trial and was very consistent as both a two-year-old and early three-year-old, which included two Group 1 placings.
After being thrown into the deep end against older rivals in the King Charles III Stakes following her Flight Stakes placing, the 1400m to 1600m range now appears ideal.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 6 No. 9 Empire Grace
The four-year-old had done little wrong in her first two campaigns and returned with a solid effort on the Parks track on May 16.
Empire Grace recorded the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m of the fillies and mares BM64 despite getting back in the field.
She also had to work home in restricted room, making the performance better than it appears on paper.
Getting onto the main circuit should suit on Saturday and, under Class 2 handicap conditions, she drops 2.5kg from a race that contained good depth.
Rosehill Roughie Tip
Rosehill Roughie - Race 6 No. 7 I’ve Bean Tryin’
Although we are going back a while to find it, I’ve Bean Tryin’ has saluted in this grade and also been competitive in stronger company.
The Canberra-based galloper broke a long drought in September before being spelled following a subsequent Warwick Farm miss.
While the recent form does not read all that well, both May performances were encouraging, including a second-up run at Newcastle where he did his best work late despite being set a task.
The big positive is the conditions, with I’ve Bean Tryin’ boasting four wins and two placings from seven Heavy-track attempts, while the extra 100m looks ideal third-up.
