Saturday’s metro meetings present several open betting contests, and this week’s Roughies column looks to uncover runners who can outperform market expectations across the major tracks.
From Brisbane to Perth, these selections profile as horses capable of sharp improvement or better-than-advertised performances, complementing Saturday’s Best Bets.
Eagle Farm Roughie Tip
Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 4 No. 6 Cheval Chic
After a solid Brisbane debut when placing in a similar affair to what she finds here, Cheval Chic was plain second-up and has since been freshened.
The rider reported the ground was too firm, which aligns with her Victorian form.
All of her wins have come on rain-affected tracks, so firmer surfaces have historically blunted her finish.
Third-up in more suitable conditions and with stronger Melbourne references than most of these, the mare could be a sharp improver.
Flemington Roughie Tip
Flemington Roughie - Race 2 No. 12 Unseen Ruler
He’s racing well without much luck, putting together four solid efforts to open the campaign.
We were with Unseen Ruler at big odds last start at Caulfield, where the six-year-old came from the rear to finish fourth and recorded the race-fastest last 200m.
The step to 2000m looks suitable now he’s hard-fit and he draws low this time.
Last year’s form was mixed, but his consistent summer efforts give him a genuine knockout hope.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 9 No. 2 Flashing Steel
Nothing was expected first-up over 1000m, yet Flashing Steel outperformed a bolters quote when finishing fourth at Murray Bridge.
That race has since produced three subsequent winners, adding substance to the effort.
The 1050m again looked too short second-up when he tired late on hot speed, though it was still a pass mark.
Up in distance and back to a track and trip where he beat all bar Watadeel in August — a galloper who was stakes placed in September before winning an open handicap.
Pinjarra Roughie Tip
Pinjarra Roughie - Race 8 No. 11 Hard Solo
There does not appear to be much depth to this three-year-old feature.
Hard Solo could be the forgotten runner fresh, with her last six-furlong effort a luckless sixth in the Placid Ark.
She then failed at a mile in the WA Guineas before being badly held up when back to 1400m in early December.
Forgiving those runs and returning to a more suitable setup, she shapes as the value alternative.
Randwick Roughie Tip
Randwick Roughie - Race 10 No. 8 Movin Out
She did not come up in the spring, which explains the big price available first-up for Movin Out.
The Chris Waller-trained mare has been ticking over nicely in her trials.
After racing almost exclusively at Group level as a three and early four-year-old, kicking off in a BM88 represents much softer placement.
Despite some decent efforts over further, the 1300m starting point looks suitable if prepared as a miler and, in an open race to finish, she has the class to figure.
