Race 1 - 12:05PM TAB Talindert Stakes Tips (1100m)
The market leader with race experience is 1. Zambales, with the tongue tie added after a solid debut second in Sydney behind a speedy Satin Summer.
A half-brother to multiple Group winners Kallos and Tempted, he's suited drawn out in the small field for this straight-course dash.
4. Hard Kick has won all three of his jump-out's leading into this debut, showing tactical speed each time. He's been the biggest firmer in early betting.
A half-brother to dual stakes winning sprinter Mumbai Muse is 5. Shah Jahan, who has been sound in two jump-out's.
6. Autumn Lover is bred to get further, but looks to have some class. Respecting her at a price.
Verdict: Not getting carried away in the opener.
Race 2 - 12:35PM TAB We're On Tips (2000m)
12. Unseen Ruler is racing well, with four solid efforts to open his summer campaign.
We were with him at big odds last start at Caulfield, where he came from the rear to finish fourth, recording the race-fastest last 200m. 2000m should be fine now hard-fit and draw low this time.
6. Fiorenot is a lightly raced five-year-old who is improving with every start. Harder here in the hat-trick bid, but three winners have come from his last event.
2000m third-up suits 5. Sunsets, who is going fairly for the new yard. Long time between drinks, but did beat Riff Rocket in that last victory.
1. Chasing Aphrodite has been consistent without winning in two Australian preps and has claims in an open race.
Verdict: Small plays on Unseen Ruler (each-way) and Fiorenot (win).
Race 3 - 1:10PM Desirable Stakes Tips (1400m)
1. Ole Dancer gives weight to rivals as the class runner.
Spring culminated a Group 1 Thousand Guineas triumph, beating Apocalyptic, who won her prior three, including the Group 1 Flight Stakes. Also, third and fourth in the Thousand Guineas were both Group winners at their next starts. First summer jump-out only fair, but the latest was stronger.
5. Next Jen hasn't saluted since a debut win over a smart Napoleonic, but should've finished much closer first-up last prep vs Apocalyptic. Her two best runs have been when fresh.
A strong filly aiming for hat-trick, 2. Sass Appeal has impressed over summer. Is short enough vs a Group 1 winner, though.
3. Custom was okay on return and this sets up better back to fillies grade with a run under the belt.
Verdict: Backing Ole Dancer. Next Jen for exotics and/or a saver.
Race 4 - 1:45PM VOBIS Gold Prelude Tips (QC) (1100m)
1. Photograph was ridden out past the line in a recent jump-out.
Two of her three wins have come fresh, while after an unlucky spring return, she worked home in the inferior lanes for fourth in a Group 3 over this track-and-trip. This is the weakest race she's seen since a Sydney BM72 win last autumn.
Ciaron Maher can get them to go through the grades quickly, which has somewhat been a surprise with 2. Immortal Star, who has thrived since a Mornington win in December.
6. Jennyanydots was terrific first-up at Cranbourne, chasing with the fastest closing sectionals of the January 30 card.
9. Jakivy is getting costly, but with 5.5kg less from his third-up run, he could be dangerous late.
Verdict: Right race for Photograph, but it's still very open.
Race 5 - 2:20PM The Schweppes Plate Tips (1200m)
The Richard & Chantelle Jolly yard always need to be respected when crossing the border and they prepare 5. Great Maximus, who placed via his last attempt up the Flemington straight.
There's was merit to both January efforts, covering ground each time and the latest was in Listed company.
4. Ndola chased gamely off a slow tempo last time and just missed, with the honest gelding back to 1200m here, and has three wins and a second from five tries at this trip.
Another consistent type is 9. Behaviour and his best run of the prep came a fortnight ago and has just 51kg here.
7. Rue De Royale was a touch plain in the same Caulfield event, but prior straight-track form was sound.
Verdict: Something each-way on Great Maximus.
Race 6 - 2:55PM Be Captivated Trophy Tips (2500m)
Firm ground appears key to 2. Saint George.
Only top two miss of the season came in the Ballarat Cup on a Soft 6 and the grey bounced off that to win his next two. Proven over further Europe, so the rise in trip appears logical and from his January 17 triumph, he meets the runner-up 2kg better off.
11. Steel Run is lightly raced with upside and caught the eye fresh for fourth. First three in that Caulfield race all won their next starts. Scratched from a much weaker Cranbourne event for this.
We didn't see the real 8. Paradise Storm second-up. Was too bad to be true there and blinkers now go on.
Second-up platform maybe not ideal for 4. Scary, but the return was decent and he's progressive.
Verdict: Saint George is the obvious. Steel Run and Paradise Storm the value.
Race 7 - 3:30PM The Elms Handicap Tips (1400m)
Things didn't pan out in The Ingham for 5. Sabaj, but the subsequent jump-out was sharp.
His first three runs for the Price & Kent (Jnr) yard suggested he could progress to better company than this. A classy four-year-old with plenty of upside, a low draw perhaps the query, but $3+ looks more than fair.
2. Cafe Millenium was good fresh and is better placed on the bigger track at Flemington. Via his last try over this track-and-trip, he beat Transatlantic, who won his next two, including a Group 1.
The third behind Real Zeus on return reads well for 8. Justadeel, as does the unlucky Big Dance fourth to Gringotts.
6. Matcha Latte draws out, but could look for the front, as there isn't much speed here.
Verdict: Sabaj can knock this off en route to better things. Best Bet.
Race 8 - 4:10PM Black Caviar Lightning Tips (1000m)
4. Tentyris couldn’t have been more impressive when taking out the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby Day.
He was scratched from the Champions Sprint after becoming fractious at the barriers, but avoiding that testing surface may prove a blessing. Drawn wide in the small field allows Damian Lane to find clear air and aim at the best ground late, and while first-up is a query, the shorter turnaround helps.
1. Giga Kick returned to form in spring with two wins from as many starts, the latest a Group 1 triumph in the Champions Sprint.
The 1000m on firm ground isn't his ideal scenario, but he has won three of five up the Flemington straight and his most recent jump-out looked sharp.
6. Marhoona remains very lightly raced with just five starts overall and brings a perfect fresh record.
Her class will be tested in weight-for-age company, although her juvenile form ties closely with Tempted and she arrives off two good trials.
7. My Gladiola could be as suited as any fresh at 1000m and she hasn't missed the top two in three straight-track attempts.
Verdict: Tentyris and Giga Kick can both be backed, but it's a hot race.
Race 9 - 4:50PM CS Hayes Stakes Tips (1400m)
2. Sixties had every favour when rolling a smart Autumn Boy in September, but that's still a great reference.
With a low weight he pounced fresh vs older rivals in Sydney, and while getting short enough at an odds-on quote, that may simply reflect the Space Rider scratching.
Interested to see how 9. Asakura goes. Should've won by further fresh and while still a little raw, was then dominant at Geelong. The debut form vs Welcometotheshow has stood up.
6. Romantic Encounter had jumped out well and is a much better horse than what we saw first-up. Yes to 1400m.
The spring fell away for 1. West Of Swindon, but there was strong prior form, including a Group 2 victory.
Verdict: Sixties on top by default. Not a great betting race.
Race 10 - 5:30PM Frances Tressady Stakes Tips (1400m)
Queensland visitor 1. Philia skipped the spring, not a huge shock given the long second campaign and there's been plenty of work put in before this Melbourne campaign — she was up and trialling at the beginning of December.
Perhaps aiming at an All-Star Mile and she wasn't as dynamic when past 1600m last prep.
3. Wrote To Arataki has a fitness edge on some key rivals and arrives off an impressive fresh win at Caulfield. The mare did take out this Group 3 when second-up last year.
A lack of fresh form the knock for 4. Too Darn Discreet, however she's classy and was spelled after a win. Bolted in with her last jump-out.
6. Eternal Flame went off the boil, but was a dual Group winner when up and firing. There were better signs fresh.
Verdict: Happy to be with Philia, but there's some depth to the finale. Eternal Flame the blowout.
