Belmont Tips August 26

Lawn Pride Australia Maiden Tips (Race 4)

Belmont Best Bet - Race 4 No. 4 Truly Loyal

Bred and owned by Bob Peters and racing in his famous cerise and white colours, Truly Loyal resumes after being beaten as an odds-on favourite on debut at Ascot on April 22.

There were excuses in that 1000m assignment, with the gelding settling back from a wide draw and never looking completely comfortable, while the distance also appeared on the sharp side despite him still recording the fastest last 200m of the race.

He had shown plenty of promise in a trial victory before that first race-day appearance, bolting in over 950m at Lark Hill, and repeated the dose in his latest hit-out ahead of Wednesday's return.

That most recent trial came on a Soft 6 and Truly Loyal was not knocked around late, with 1200m shaping as a much more suitable starting point this time around.

From a strong family that includes Group 1 winner Perfect Reflection, the Michael Grantham-trained galloper gets William Pike aboard, with the jockey-trainer combination striking at better than 35% over the past 12 months.

Belmont Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Marcos

A better price may be available closer to the jump with Marcos after he went down as a well-backed favourite at Northam last start, where he had every chance but threw away an opportunity against Flying Maradona.

That Class 1 was run in very good time for the grade and the first two opened a sizeable margin on the rest, with the winner ultimately proving the more professional of the pair.

There is still plenty of upside with the three-year-old, who may be better suited by the slight drop in distance and potentially a quieter ride this time around.

Those tactics worked well in his July 29 return over this track-and-trip, where he overcame trouble, took a gap and let down strongly with the second-fastest final 200m of the entire program.

There was clearly some opinion of Marcos early despite him remaining winless through his first campaign, which culminated at Listed level, and in what does not look an overly deep affair, he can atone.

Belmont Roughie - Race 6 No. 10 Coracao

It is interesting to see Coracao contest this Class 1 despite still being maiden eligible, however, this race is there for taking, looking more open than the early market suggests.

There has been merit in all three of her winter runs, including her latest at Bunbury when she was backed into a single-figure quote and should have gone close after being held up at a key stage in the straight.

Once clear, the mare finished strongly and recorded the fastest last 200m of the race, with that effort following a forgivable second-up performance when caught wide throughout.

Her campaign had opened with a solid fourth on Soft 7 ground at Bunbury in a maiden that has since produced two subsequent winners, and she was four weeks between runs heading into her next assignment.

With two recent 1400m runs under the belt, the four-year-old should now be close to peak fitness, while veteran hoop Shaun O'Donnell takes over in the saddle.

Belmont Value Bet - Race 8 No. 7 Slick

There was merit in Slick's August 1 return over 1200m at Belmont, where she was held up until around the 200m before working home fairly well for fifth.

That outing followed a fourth in a Belmont trial on July 20, while she was more one-paced second-up on August 15 in a race that had some pressure.

The daughter of Sessions should strip fitter again with that run under the belt, and this looks like suitable placement coming back to a midweek Class 3.

She rises 2kg but carried half a kilo more when winning an Ascot Class 1 at the same stage of her summer campaign, so the weight should not be an issue.

The main query is stepping beyond seven furlongs for the first time, although her pedigree suggests 1650m should be within reach, with dam Silver Serena a mile winner and having produced Black For Cash, whose four victories have all been in the 1600m and 1800m range.
